running lean... Qjet

everytime its at a hot idle, the engine light will turn on after 2-3 minutes of waiting. I cant pass smog if the light keeps turning on. So is there a way to fattin up the mixture on the quadrajets? or am i just *** out of luck?

ALso when the car is completely warm, the choke should be completely open correct?

HELP greatly appreciated.

thanks
Omar

There is an adjustment for the mixture. But first check for vacuum leaks- that's the #1 all time champion for a too-lean idle condition on a CCQjet engine. Next, do a good stock rebuild on the carb to clean years of accumulated crud out of it. Works wonders on old carbs.

Last line of attack is to adjust the Idle Air Bypass valve. It is located inside the tall "tower" on the top/outside of the carb dead-center just in front of the primary throttle bores. There is a little metal plate on top of it held in by two rivets, one on each side. Drill out the rivets and remove the plate. Underneath you will find a large brass screw with a slot for a regular screwdriver. That's the IAB valve. Screw it clockwise to richen the idle mixture, CCW to lean it. Move in small steps- 1/4 turn at a time. if you have to go more than 1 full turn from it's stock setting something's seriously wrong inside the carb.

If you have access to a device that can measure the mixture control solenoid's duty cycle while running (scan tool) you want to adjust the IAB to bring the MC duty cycle DEAD-CENTER of it's range at idle- 50% duty cycle. If you don't ave access to such a tool don't freak, just make an adjustment, wait 30 seconds for the ECM to react to it and see if the check engine light goes out. If not, adjust it a little further and so on until the light goes out. The engine must be fully warmed up before you do this procedure.

Good luck.

well this is the second qjet that has been on in the last 2 yrs. we had to replace the old one because it was a messed up rebuild. We had the same symptoms as the old one. code 44 after a few minutes of hot idle. so im kind of thinking this carb is crappy too. its only 2 yrs old.

but as you were saying on richining up the mixture. its that front center thing on the carb, kinda where the fuel sprays? im pretty sure i know what your talking about. But arent there adjustment screws at the bottom of the carb aswell? ill take a further look later on. thanks

You need a dwell meter and the idle mix screw tool from napa. Get a Chiltons or Haynes manual they will show you how to tune it.
