Black smoke
Black smoke
I just threw on a carb I rebuilt from the junk yard and I've noticed it idles real low and blows black smoke out the exhaust when I start it the longer it sits the worse and longer lasting it is. This only happens after a few hours any ideas? It runs fine after allitle bit but it's like it's running super rich after it sits for a while.
Thanks,
Randy

Did you try to adjust the idle mixture and float level? Check the power valve if its a holley.
Are the needle and seat new?

The choke could be adjusted wrong. The choke SHOULD open after a few minutes of running time, however. Run the engine for 5 minutes. The choke plate above the primaries should be vertical or nearly so by then. If it runs fine once the choke is off then check the following:
When the engine first starts (cold engine)the choke should "pop open" about 3/16" immediately after startup. This is done by the vacuum diaphragm on the pass. side of the carb. If it's not working or not adjusted correctly you will get a really rich mix for about the first 2-5 minutes.
If you're stuck, shoot me an email and I'll try to help out.
Please note that computer controlled carbs can have MANY other things wrong with them that can produce simialar symptoms.

I think it's the choke I readjusted it and now I get a light smoke for a few secs but nothing like before. I've already tuned the idle with it hot in drive. I think it's just a matter of fine tuning since I don't have a an angle guage. I also have a slight bog but I'm not done tweaking the secondaries. See my new post for more.
Thanks
