L69 carb question

I want to get a better carb. I've been looking at the Edlebrock Performer. The 50 state legal one. I was wondering if this carb was compatabile with my car. It's an 84 TA with the L69 motor.
Would a Holley be better for my car??
I'm looking for something at 600-650 cfm.

"50 State Legal" does not apply to computer controlled carbs, which yours is, which also means that carb is not compatible with computer controlled distributors.

Also, both Edelbrock and Holley are square bore flanges, meaning neither would fit your stock intake manifold without an adapter.

You also need to better define "better". Your stock carb flows around 700-750 cfm, so if flow is what you're looking for, you already have a "better" carb.

Unless it's been beat up or otherwise abused, the stock q-jet is rarely the cause of problems on a stock 305.

I have an 84 TA with an L69 and it doesn't have a dual snorkel. I think only the Z28s got them.

I would say you're looking at 10 Hp with new manifold and carb... only if you match Q-jet's ~700 CFM... If you add open element or snorkels maybe 15 or 20 Hp... but then again if your car is tuned real well right now you will probably only see 10 Hp max...

Check out my ride... needs a little work... looks pretty good though

Rock,
What I think you need to understand is that the carb is not the first place to go for more HP. Headers & cat would add a lot more for only slightly more money, cam would do even more with the headers, World S/R 305 heads would be complimented nicely by the exhaust & cam; and even then the q-jet will handle all the duties just fine.

If you do something with the intake, get a Performer or Action + (EGR version). If, someday, you do go with an Edelbrock or Holley carb, either of those intakes will have the bolt pattern to work with the square bore mount as well as your q-jet (which you are going to keep until all the things in the above paragraph are done).

Sweet. So headers, catback, and a catalytic converter is where I should start?

Absolutely. Then perhaps cam and intake.

I agree, start with exhaust, cam, then heads and intake. A good bang for the buck also is gears, if u have an L69 car, you have that already...
