Engine Running On

Help - Anybody out there know why my engine is running on for a few seconds after I switch off? I think that the choke is still on because the revs are more than 1500/1750 and the infamous choke dash light stays on but I also know that my alternator is dead, soon to be rebuilt/replaced. Will the running on and high revs be connected to my dead alternator?The car isn't being used until I sort out the alternator but I am hoping that the running on/high revs/choke still operating(?)will be cured with the fitting of a replacement alternator. Any info/ideas gratefully received. 1985 Iroc 305 4bbl Auto.

It could be related to the alternator. After you get that fixed, check the voltage to the choke with the engine running. You should have about the same voltage as you have at the battery. If low, check the wiring and the choke relay.
