choke won't work

so i put on a 4160 holley i had but i can't get the choke to work, i have to give the car gas so it doesnt stall. the bimetal spring works cuz i looked at it when it had power and it moved. i tried turning the housing a quarter turn in the rich direction but that didnt help much, if at all. there's the fast idle adjustment screw (i think that's what it's called) behind the choke housing but it's so damn hard to get at i could only turn it a quarter turn. so what do i need to do? thanks.

The choke does seem to open pretty fast on mine. I don't mind when I'm out at the track, because I don't want it closing between rounds. I actually adjust it lean during the summer so that it barely closes when cold - just enough to get it running.

Sounds like you just need to go through the adjustment steps, even though it can be a pain. I'm assuming it is fully closing when cold when you tap the throttle - correct?

i'm really new to carbs so i'm not really sure what the proper way is to adjust the choke, can you spell it out for me? by 'fully closing' do you mean the flaps on top of the primary air horn that connect down to the choke? if that's it then they don't close at all.

also after the car is warm, the idle is really high unless i goose the throttle but then if i accelerate it'll stay high again, is this part of the choke? when it's cold i cant get it to idle high unless i push on the gas.

Check this site http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/TechSer.../FMCTech.html. It has a lot of good info about their carbs, including exploded views.

Wouldn't you know it, it's a little weak on choke info. You can download their rebuild and adjustment manual for a little help, though.

You may have something that's not put together quite right. The thermostat spring needs to be hooked to the choke linkage tab, for instance. When you turn the thermostat housing to the rich direction (counterclockwise when facing the carb), it should close the choke butterfly when cold. Or, something may be gummed up.

Is this a new or used carb?
