Please Anybody, Everybody... I need help with '79 vette Q-jet Calling all C3's!

I have a '79 C3 vette carb here and I am planning to install it on my car. I know it fits, just need to know where all the hoses go. So here is the info:

Rochester Q-Jet off of an L48 engine, ID # 17059507 runs through as california emmissions, with auto.

I want to know this:
What designates it as a california carb?
Does anybody have a pic of a carb installed in a vette up close or a vacuum diagram?

Any help will be much appreciated.

I did try to install it last weekend after a successful rebuild and I just got lost, because the Edelbrock is a much different animal.

The "California emissions" simply meant it was calibrated to meet the stricter California requirements for the 1979 year model. Any more attempts at defining what that means would only serve to expose a healthy reservoir of ignorance.

Not sure why you're having trouble figuring out what goes where. The vacuum line from the distributor goes to the timed vacuum port, typically on the front passenger corner on the main body of the carb. The large nipple on the front/center of the throttle body goes to the PCV valve. If you still have the charcoal canister, it needs manifold vacuum, as do the EFE and air cleaner TVM (if you still have a snorkel-style cleaner) - these are typically located on the throttle body corners. The threaded port in back goes to the power brakes.

If your hood or radiator support still have the vacuum diagram, that should give you a good idea how it all fits together. There weren't that many changes between later non-CC q-jets and CC q-jets with respect to the vacuum ports.

What does the choke hook up to? Does it rout back to the carb? Also, the PCV valve has a connection that looks like it should go to the valve cover... is this correct?

The main problem I have is that I never saw the original carb on the car, because the original owner had already tossed it for the Edelbrock...

I've got a performer intake and There is a tube that was capped off coming from the intake manifold (behind the carb)... where does that go?

Should I just cap off the connections that can't find a home?

Ah, must be a hot air choke. Get an electric conversion for it. Don't try messing with the original choke, it's supposed to have a tube that sticks down into the exhaust crossover passage to warm the choke thermostat. The Performer doesn't have the proper mount for that type of choke (although my ZZ3 manifold does).

The PCV valve goes into the valve cover, with a hose attached to the carb as I explained.

The port in the intake runner behind the carb is for accessories. I didn't mention that because it doesn't have to be disturbed to replace the carb.

After everything you need is hooked up and working, you can cap off anything that's unused.

Forgot to mention the fuel bowl vent to the charcoal canister. Another large fitting at the top front driver's side corner of the carb.

So what does the connection on the intake manifold do?

Ahh... ok, well I think I've got enough guts to hook it up now... I didn't want to be putting gas in my oil or oil in my gas... Thanks for the help.

Yes, it's a hot air choke. We have a '79 vette (non-california emissions though), and I ditched the hot air choke for an electric last year. Hot air chokes suck.
