bogging acceleration on cold start up
I was looking for pointers on my Rochester M4ME quadrajet. I have adjusted the fast idle while cold, but I am still getting a lot of bogging sluggishness when hopping on the accelerator when the water is btw 120-160 F. I have not yet done the rebuild kit and was hoping to buy a bit of time before having to do so. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hey Marquise!
I'll email one of the tech articles on the QJet to you.
By the way, what is a moosewang spanker?

It doesn't sound to me like there is anything wrong with your carb. I get the same thing and it runs fine after about 5-10 min... It's not the carb's fault, it's got to do with the fuel having trouble with atomizing.

Can't expect perfect performance from a carb set up to have clean emissions 'till it warms up. BUT,you can minimize the driability problems when cold by making sure all the engine management (emission controls) are working properly. These are all designed to provide quick warm up on cold mornings, to both increase drivability and reduce emissions. These go hand in hand. eg Manifold heated air inlet valve on the air cleaner, manifold heat raiser valve on the exhaust manifold is working and the exhaust track under the carb plenum isn't plugged with carbon, Make sure the egr
valve is not leaking at idle and that egr doesn't flow 'till the water is warmed up (temp switch) Make sure the choke is set right and it is getting power. Check the choke pull-off vacuum diaghrams on the side of the carb are working. Install new spark plugs and set the gap @.045". Inspect the rest of the ignition system for worn or bad parts. Usually its not a problem with the carb itself but one or more of the other engine controls that needs attention. Don't try to re-engineer the system by disconecting
this and that. The different systems are designed to work together and do. Hope this helps...

ChillPhatCat:
It seems you are right. Poor carb is overtaxed when cold.
F-BIRD'88:
Your input was appreciated. Although I do not
have emissions controls nor a choke pull off.
Will finish recurving the distributor and perhaps that will help things somewhat. Cheers! -Moosewang Spanker
