HEI Distributor and Carb selection help please
I posted this on CZ28.com but I figure I'll get more responses here
Ok, so I've been going through my car and looking at the HUGE mess under the hood. I've decided that all these stupid vacuum lines have got to go. There's an after market cruise control setup under there that provides for about 100 extra vacuum lines which crowds it up like MAD. This is not good, or conducive to an easy modding climate under here. Being that this is all in the way and probably hooked up with my ECM in some weird way I figure I'll go the direct route and eliminate that vacuum leak and all the other problems I've been having by replacing the trusty q-jet and distributor with a non CC model of each.
That said, I need some help with choosing what to buy. I currently have a 305 HO L69 engine, but I am going to upgrade next year sometime to possibly a fast burn 350 or (hopefully) a 383 and I'm not too keen on buying a new carb now only to find out that I have to upgrade it next year, so I'm thinking that a 750 cfm Holly or Demon would be ideal for me considering I could rejet it to run better with the 305 without giving it too much air. As far as the distributor I don't know... Accel blueprint HEI? Also what else is involved in this switch? Is it as easy as just disconnecting the computer and plugging all the holes? I see that I'd have no more smog equipment (boo hoo) so I realize that it would not be technically streetable, so I don't know what to do about that, except maybe mistar smarteepants mechanic will miss that whole thing if you know what i mean.
Anyway all input will be taken into consideration, I would really like to hear opinions on this.
Thanks,
Paul

A 750 is too big for a 305. In fact, a q jet is even more thn the 305 needs, it really only needs about 550 cfm.
For a bigger 383 making good power, a 750 sounds good.
I replaced my CC qjet on my L69 with a non CC qjet and am very pleased.
My car has a bigger cam, 10:1 compression and ported heads and intake too, the qjet is all the motor needs and more.

I heard it was easy to re-jet the carb so that its flow is cut way down though, especially with the vacuum secondaries? Maybe not I guess, I don't know for sure after all...

Thing is, I've really got it in my mind to get rid of the ECM. I forgot to order the o2 bung in my headers so it'll make the ECM force the carb to run rich, so I NEED to replace it with a non-cc carb. I don't know, maybe I'll just save up for a big block and buy a 600cfm holly...

The QJet with vacuum secondaries is a really intelligently designed carb and thus does not over-carburate the 305. You will be fine if you just go to the Tech Articles on this site and get Damon Nickles' column on tuning the QJet. The old 305 will go like stink after that, I guarantee you!

It is exactly the setup you are looking to use. Lots of people are ditching the cokmputer controlled junk and going back to the dinosaur age. Works pretty good

I've seen good luck with the summit 'HEI' dist. A holley 600 vaccum secondary with an action plus intake would work nice. Or, if you install a little bit better cam, maybe the stealth intake.
------------------
350 with stealth intake, holley carb, 470 lift cam. 700r4 with .5 boost valve, vette servo, tci lock-up kit, B&M megashifter. Richmond 3.73 gears, powertrax locker, timkin bearings, synthetic lube. Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, currant red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...
