it depends an basically what type of gas you use, among other things - the higher grade gas you use, the more advanced you can make it - basically you want to advance it until you here the engine pinging (aka detonation) - then back it off slightly so that you dont hear the ping
could be just about any degree, as mine has gone from like 6 to about 13 depending on where and what type of fuel i use

Stock LG-4 timing recommendation is 0* BTDC, at least on my brother's 85 Z. An increase to 4* BTDC should be no problem for most engines. Beyond that you'll have to try it and see if the car likes it or not.

I assume this is NOT for your 89, since they didn't put the LG-4 in the FBody after 1986.

my 87 has an lg4, they stopped it that year, but only a few were made, they weren't very popular for good reason.

yeah, im burdened with the same engine..... im looking to drop a 5.7 tpi from an 88 iroc in it to take its place. that might be able to wake it up a little. but my timing with my mods is still set at zero, today im gonna knock it up to 6-8 degrees advanced with 92 octane

no the 89 is TBI not an LG4, the LG4 is in a recent project i picked up off my dad for a cool 2 grand (family always gets the sweet deals) its in an 86 trans am fully loaded with a 9 bolt posi and 700r4 tranny. Thats more of my daily driver type car, my 89 has been in storage for about 2 years and every winter before than and my 85 also sits in storage, those are more of my "ill have 20+ years down the road" type cars.......if n e one cares to see n e pics of eiher of them ill be happy to send to a fellow thirdgen lover
