How Hard to replace a cc quadrajet?
How hard is it to replace a cc quadrajet with the same thing? Also how much should i have to pay for a new quadrajet. I have the car at a mechanic and he wants $650 for the carb alone without labor. I thought that was a little crazy. It seems my carb has a bearing that is shot and the only way to get a new bearing is to take it out of another quadrajet, so a rebuild kit wont do it. i need help cuz im short on cash. Thanks in advance for the help.
bearing shot? i suppose he is talking about too much play in the butterfly openings?
seriously, look for a cc quadrajet can be gotten for around 15-30$, plus a rebuild - make sure it's around the year of yours, and that it has the right vacuum ports
do NOT, i repeat do NOT pay 650 for a carb
if you need help in walking through a rebuild, i've done 2 in the past month (both cc quadrajets - one was an 85, one an 86 - 17 bucks for the rebuild, and there isn't anything cokmplicated about them, especially if the tamper studs are still in place, meaning you don't have to tune it at all
please post on whatever you decide to do, as we'll all be glad to help

and as for how hard it is to replace, you pull of all the vacuum hoses, take off four bolts, pull off carb, put good one on, replace bolts, replace vacuum lines - the worst part is clamping the gas line and worrying the car is gonna catch fire - don't worry, it wont - the gas boils off the manifold, if it's that hot, just don't use a styrofoam cup to catch the drops of gas that leak out anyway :-)

take your car out of there and don't ever bring it there again. I bought a working carb (already tested & pulled) from the JY for $50 no serious problems besides being somewhat out of adjustment and very crusty!! three cans of carb cleaner took care of that but I'm still trying to work out the bugs. I'll keep you posted.

forgot to add...most places will rebuild a ccq-jet for $200-$250 stock or performance, anyway you want it,regardless of condition...as long as it's all there, this guy must be a novice to the trade and lack hook-ups. on top of that he has no right to quote you $650..you could find an entire running used SBC or even a whole f-body for that much!!!
Ok today i went over to the place and it seems that that bearing is what pulls up on the metering rod and it creates a bog a WOT so he tried to just replace the bearing but it didnt work but he thinks he can get just a top piece of the carb then well be all set. I'm pretty sure this guy knows what hes talking about. today he said the only reason he gave us the 650 quote was because he thought we needed it back fast and it was a holley. Anyway its there and so far hes done the best. the last place i brought it to said the car had a huge electircal problem and needed to be brought to a dealer and this place found that all that was wrong was a small crack in a vaccum line which was giveing a check engine light. So i have faith and my friends dad owns a machine shop and does a lot of business with them and called over and told them to take care of us so i think im good. But thanks for all the help i will keep you all posted on what happens. And ya spending 650 was not very logical seeing i only spent 700 for the car. Thanx guys.

i'm still uncertain of the bearing he talks about - there is a ball bearing that is used as a check valve, but as far as the metering rods go, i can't remember of any bearings connected to the metering rods - if it is the secondaries (which would be logical at WOT) there is merely the rods connected to the hanger, and the rods get shoved down a little hole
also, i would reccomend that if he is taking the top of the carb off, that you go ahead and do a rebuild - any of the gaskets being cracked can create a bog at wot, as mine had the same problem - turns out the base gasket connecting to the intake was cracked, and it fixed it right up
if replacing the top of the carb doesn't work (and i get the feeling it won't) i reccomend paying off the mechanicbefore it gets expensive, and replacing the carb with another one freshly rebuilt
ok, so i'm curious, try asking where the bearing is on the chart

Ok its more of a washer than bearing it goes right in the middle of the secondarie butterflys. The guy at the shop said he has only seen this happen like 3 or 4 times in his career and yes hes gonna do a rebuild of the carb anyway.
you mean the black thing that rises as you push the butterflies broke off? wow i'd never thought that could happen, but yea that would completely make you bog at wot - same amount of gas as primaries, but like about 120% the amount of air - good luck on getting it fixed, and hope he doesn't charge you too much
Well i got may car back everything is fixed and it runs great. the mechanic found a cc carb for free so he just charged me for labor so im all good now thanks for lookin out for me guys.
