Run-on,why?

I am having a problem with my carb, I think. I took a trip today that was about an hour and a half long, one way. When I got to where I was going, the car was running fine. I let it sit for a short time and then, when I reached my final destination, I shut the car off and it kept running-on. This continued throughout the day. At one time, I had a hard time restarting it after I got gas. The rpm's would increase if I put the car into park(at a fast idle).Even when it was in drive and sitting at a stop light, the car would rev high (1750rpm). Reving the engine a bit to kick it down didn't work.Is the fast idle stuck? If so, does all it need is some lubricant?Could my timing go out just like that? I just had the timing adjusted a month ago and everything is tight.

My Holley was doing the same thing except that it wasn't quite that hight rpm. In park mine was running about 1750 but in gear it was about 1200 and did the engine run on alot. A buddy told me it was the high idle that was causing it because it was shooting too much fuel in as you shut it off so it wants to keep running. I backed off the idle with the idle screw until it idled at about 800-900 in gear and maybe 1000 in park and it's been 2 weeks and hasn't had run on since. I don't know if youv'e allready tried this or not, but if you haven't, you need to get the idle down. 1750 is way high.

First things first, check for vacuum leaks and check the timing. I'd say there is abotu a 90% chance it's one of those.
