Possible Choke Linkage Problem

I am posting this in this section because I think it best fits here. I have a 305 4bbl 86 TA stock.

The problem is, sometimes when I turn off the car is Diesels BADLY. The choke light comes on and it continues forever, unless I turn key back on, put in gear and turn off again, which sometimes doesnt work also, sometimes I can press the gas pedel in half way and it kind of sounds like pressure releasing and it stops.

I pulled the air assembly off and checked the carb for vac and linkage problems, I noticed on the left hand side where the adjustment screw goes it doesnt have a linkage. I am not sure if this one is supposed to have one or not...

This problem seems to be more of when the engine is hot and just been ran a while moreso than a short run to and from.

I want to fix the "run-on" dieseling soon as I think it may damage my motor etc if I dont.

Any help and suggestions are appreciated.

The choke light comes on because the alternator is no longer spinning fast enough to produce enough voltage to keep it turned off. It's not necessarily trying to tell you there's something wrong with the choke.

That's not the only reason I suspected choke, I suspect it because of the missing part. Out to take pics now... will post in a minute...

if the car is running with the ignition off.. you have to ask yourself, why is this car FIRING off without the spark plugs?

as long as the engine is pulling air in, it'll get fuel from the carb... but why can it fire?

Pic of the questioned side:

I am not too carb savvy, but the engine is off and the choke is cracked open.... I think something is odd with that, the adjustment is all the way in.... I think thats off also.

I dont know why it is firing off without power to the distributor, it has a HEI coil and no the fan is not wired to it, so there is no reverse generator effect going on.

I tried 92 octane with octane boost so its not bad gas either.... im lost and confused...

Nope nothing missing carb is intact.

Look at all the black crap on the air horn. When you carb gets that build up it's from over fueling which will cause the run on problem your having. I doubt taking a tad of timing out will help in this situation. Your carb hasent been rebuilt before at least properly since the rivits are still in the choke housing. It's time to rebuild this carb and epoxy the casting plugs since they are probably whats causing it to run on.

that and excessive carbon build up heating up, and igniting the fuel.

I knew it was very dirty, its the original carb from 1986 and never been rebuilt. hardly anything other than oil changes and ignition mainenece was done.

I have never rebuilt a carb before and I am confident I can. I will check for the tech page on how to do this.

One more question though, the rivits, how are they removed? Is there a rebuild guide with pics?

Thanks.

The rivets will have to be drilled out.

That's where I will screw things up.

Anyone in GA willing to meet for a day and walk me through this?

Ill bring the rebuild kit and carb, and you supply the drill ;-)

There's nothing to drilling them out. You don't have to drill right through them, you just need to dimple the heads enough that they'll fall apart.
