simple q-jet questions
simple q-jet questions
problem: high idle (~1200 rpms) that just started monday of this week. when tapping accelerator to kick it down, the idle stays the same.
I checked the archives then popped my hood thinking i know where to start looking - i'm still stuck. When i had my brother hit the accelerator, it was also moving that little piece on the passenger side of the carb. and my idle would go high again, but if i pushed that little lever thing down my idle would go back to normal. Is that supposed to be happening? Everytime i tell my bro to rev, the little lever thing would go up again making my idle high! Sorry if this sounds like babble, i'm very frustrated and my grammar skills are messed up.
any suggestions? This carb is a rebuilt CCC q jet. *sigh, goes off to read the archives again*

Your choke isn't opening fully. Most common reason (if you have an electric choke) is that the wire that goes to the choke isn't supplying 12V any more (key in RUN position). Simply leaving it unplugged is the #1 culprit. #2 is that something happened to the wiring or relay that supplies the voltage down that wire. #3 is that the choke element itself is shot. Check for these problems in that order.
If you have a hot-air style choke (older style) then it's likely that the lines that supply the hot air to the choke element housing have become clogged.
This is a very common type of QJet problem.

I assume you're talking about a green, weight-like thing. That's the high idle cam, and it is being pushed up by the choke thermostat.
The thermostat should have 12 volts going to it to warm it up and release the tension on the choke and high idle cam. Make sure the wire has 12 volts with the ignition on and is hooked up. If so, then you probably have a bad thermostat (may even have the wrong type of thermostat on that rebuild).

SAVED! thanks for the help guys. I'll check it out first thing free time. BTW, i'm thinking of purchasing a qjet book. I see two choices There's the one by Haynes (published in '94) and there's another one written by Doug Roe (i've heard nothing but good about this one). Either one would be a good choice right?
IMHO, don't waste your money on the Haynes manual.
Buy the Doug Roe book and get a year specific FACTORY service manual and read read read.
If you keep your eyes on Ebay, you can probably get a service manual for 20 - 30 dollars. Be sure that it's a factory manual.
I am a firm believer in the factory stuff, they built it and they probably know best about fixing it

thanks for the help guys, my rochester book by roe is should be here tuesday from amazon.com. BTW, would holding down that high idle cam be bad for it? My friend suggested (as a very temporary fix) to put something in there to hold it down til i have time to fix the deng thing (stupid finals). I guess he's just as annoyed as i am with the dieseling after shutdown.
You could tie the choke and fast idle cam open and out of the way but you would have to figure out how many pumps to give the gas pedal to get it to start when cold and then hold the throttle pedal down enough to keep it running till it would idle on its own.
Since the weather has warmed up, you shouldn't have too much trouble doing it that way untill it is fixed properly.
I seem to recall doing that on a Q-jet many years ago when I lost power to the choke coil. If I remember right I had a wire rub through and it was blowing fuses at the drop of a hat.
The Doug Roe book is a good choice. It will cover most of your questions, but you would also do well to get the factory manual also.
It will cover the electronics, trouble shooting, and adjustments more in depth than Mr. Roe can due to the fact that Q-jets were installed on many different engines, each with their own calibrations and adjustments.
