SA carb detonation problems
SA carb detonation problems
I just did a full carb swap parts in the signature. I am getting detonation when accelarating. Do I need to advance or retard my timing
is set at approximately 6-10 degrees at top dead center.Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

when during acceleration? all the way up? only at a certain RPM? At the top end?
Generally speaking to fight detonation you need to retard the timing. However, 6 degrees is already conservative....more details are nessecary.

it happens at the beginning and in the top end of accelaration. Now this is my first day of driving the car since my full cfi to carb swap.I need to readjust the valves and my transmission shifting way to early at like 4000 rpms. Would you know how to adjust this.
My dad says I should time the car again since grandpas timing light was ancient. Thanks for your help.

That combo just screams for a better cam, like a Comp XE268H with 1.6 roller rockers...
Try a spring & weight kit for the distributor. Try to identify when the knocking occurs (at what RPM) and try to take some timing out at that point.
Actually, a better cam might help too, by providing better cylinder pressure timing.
What pistons are in it?

What is the compression ratio on the motor?
Assuming that the compression is about where it should be for the grade gas you're using, I'd guess that it's more going lean from needing to be tuned than the timing being wrong. Also assuming that it's really at 6-10 degrees base.
First, I'd try taking off the vacuum advance line, plugging it, and put a spring and wieght kit in the distributer with heavier springs. See if that helps. Then start jetting up the secondaries.

I do not knwo what pistons are in it, and is there a way I can tell the compression. Today after driving it I shut it off and the motor just kept spuddering and did not want to quit. What could this problem be? thanks

Idle speed too high, or too much advance.
It's beginning to sound like maybe your balancer is just like every body else's, and the inertia ring has slipped so now your timing mark is inaccurate.
