Idle & Timing Issues

Well my car's idle is very inconsistent. It has a newly rebuilt Rochester QJet. Sometime the car will idle just fine when i start it up in park and when i'm driving in gear, but then when i go to park it, and put it in park from drive, then the rpms will hop up to around 1500, and when i shut it off it'll diesel. Other times it will idle around-below 500, and it'll die if i don't keep givin it gas. I checked the timing and it was jumping around a lot, but it was at 4 and i set it at 6, then tried 8, still to no change. One of my buddies said that I may have lost compression. Any ideas guys?
