New carb suggestions

I am having some real trouble with my non cc qjet. it is on an 84 350 on my 1/2 ton p/u.

the choke doesnt work and the carb has developed a serious problem with higway speeds.

when I give it gas it goes then cuts out and comes back many times about once a second. I dont see any smoke from the tailpipe so I think it is lean but I have richened up the idle mixture screws as much as I can without causing idle problems and it doesnt help.

I will replace the fuel filter today.

the fuel pump has always made a loud noise that sounds like clanking but I thought this might be normal and has not changed since the problem started.

this started when I drove it back from buffalo (6 hrs) and it wasnt so bad at first just a slight hessitation. but eventually I couldent hold the truck at 60mph as it would just kick and sputter if I tried to give it gas.

my first question is could this be happening because the exhaust crossover passages are blocked? It didnt seem like it would cause this much of a problem and ran fine for the first 2 weeks after I changed to the blocking intake gaskets.

my second question is if and when I decide to give up with it what is the best option for a reliable new carb. should I ::

a) get a replacement 650 spreadbore from holley with the same choke and everything.

b) get a square bore 600-650 holley and a new manifold.

Thanks for any suggestions either along how to fix my qjet or recomendations for a new carb.

james

Try the fuel filter first.

It would be best if you could get a fuel pressure gage on it to verify fuel pressure - could also be the fuel pump or clogged fuel pickup screen.

ok I got the fuel filter in and it helped only slightly.

I remembered that I retarded the timing from 10 degrees to 8 for the trip and tried moving it back to 10 but this doesnt help either.

While I was doing this I also noticed the reason why the previous owner had the base timing set at 20+. the timing doesnt advance at all with rpm WHICH ODDLY ENOUGH is the SAME F_ING problem Im having with my trans am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARRGGGG I hate computers and electronics. they dont belong on motors.

well that is a bit rash I am just having a bit of bad luck with them....

ok so I got a fuel pump and I should have it on in the morning and I also got a carb rebuild kit and will do that this weekend. and I also got a mechanical/vaccuum advance dissy from summit which should go in on thurs/fri.

maybe then this thing will run ok.

You said in your first post it was a NON cc Q jet. Are you still using the CC dist? If so..then no wonder you're having problems, you can't do that. That might not be all of it but it sure won't help.
