modification point on cc q jet

I wanted to know at what hp fiqure do you have to modify this carb.such as secoundaries. Also a article by chevy high performance " My Gen Camaro" states that with a high flow 3 in exhaust carb runs lean. is this true? and if so how do u remedy is it just a simple carb tune?

A high flow exhaust will cause that, no matter what carb you have. And yes, it's a simple matter of tuning the carb, usually without even taking it off or apart, in the case of a Q-Jet.

to add

I just dont want to change rods and hangers and then advance to different fuel pump. Again at what hp point does my LG4 engine run lean on stock unaltered carb. NOTE: I THINK FIVE7KID IS A PROPONET ON THE CC Q JET AND I PERCEIVE HIM TO BE A EXPERT AS I HAVE RESEARCHED IS REPLIES.

I put the DR rods and B hanger on before I made my mods - the difference was dramatic. With the mods, they still work great. The reason for that is the AV - it opens up more with increased air flow, and the taper on the rods adjusts the mixture accordingly.

Getting rid of that single snorkel air cleaner is a must. And factory exhaust, as mentioned. Just doing those things will do wonders to an otherwise stock LG4.

Changing the fuel pump shouldn't affect anything (as far as running lean is concerned, at least). The carb won't run lean under "normal" driving, because the computer adjusts the mixture in the primaries regardless of exhaust, air cleaner, modifications, fuel pump, etc. - up to a point, which you shouldn't approach as long as you don't have too radical of a cam in it.

Five7kid,

I'm looking to put in some DR rods and B hanger (this is what I've come to a conclusion that everyone thinks is the best combination). When you say the difference was "dramatic", what exactly does that imply? What kind of REAL gain did you see/feel with these? Did you also set your AV tension according to the tech article on this site?

I am definitely not very knowledgable when it comes to carbs. The reason I ask is that I just recently had my carb rebuilt by some guy on my dad's UPS route that builds race engines. He went through and replaced EVERYTHING (it was pretty worn out). He also drilled out the ?primary mixture screw? and replaced it with a richer screw, or something to the effect b/c of the fact that I have removed all my emissions crap. Seems like it is running VERY GOOD compared to before, with the exception of the choke needing to be set correctly once and for all, but that is another issue...

I want to do this, but on the other hand, I don't want to screw anything up since it is running pretty good as it is right now. I respect your opinion, I think you know what your talking about (at least in everything I've ever read of your replies). Do you think it will still help with the new rods/hanger/AV tension set properly? Or will I get some kind of too-rich-of-a-mixture with those, since it already is set to run richer (I realize the guy set the primaries for richer, but I dont know what effect it will have with richer secondaries from the rods and hanger also...) Ya, its all easily reversible if I install them, I just dont want to waste the money on the rods and hanger whereas it can be spent elsewhere, if you think it will be too much for my little 305 with what I have already...

Any opinion appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben
