Holley carb tuning...please help.

I know this is not third gen but I need help.

Two days ago I bought a 69 chevy truck It has a 350.It came with a 2 barrel.Well last night it started running really bad.So I figured it was the carb.So I started to swap another 2 barrel on it.Well One of the studs broke on the intake.

So I ended up swapping a LG4 intake of my 86 sport coupe.Along with a adapter and a holley 600cfm 4160.Carb.It has 1850 on the choke tower.I finnally got it to idle. But any thing after that is spits and sputter. And even backfires a little.Whenever you have a back fire it blows out the power valve right.I am positive I got the distibutor in the same spot.

I can't get this thing to run very good.I need to get it fixed by tommorow.I got to drive it to work!

Also where do I hook the distrubitor up for the vacuam advance. Also There is a nipple on the side that is 3/8.it is pulling alot of vacuam right now I got this blocked off.Where do I hook the vacuam line up for the vacaum secondaries. And the stock lg4 intake has the egr thing on the side.I blocked that off.Is that hurting me?

Any help would be awesome.

Unless you adjusted the timing with a timing light, you don't know if it is set correctly.

Since it wasn't running correctly with the old carb, you very likely switched over the problem with the new carb. What distributor does this have - points? Has it had a new set of point and condensor put in lately? Is the dwell set properly? (Dwell is adjusted before timing.)

Your other questions:

The 3/8" line is for the PCV. It's best to have it hooked up.

The vacuum advance is hooked to the vacuum nipple on the passenger side front of the carb.

The vacuum secondaries are ported internally. You don't hook them up to anything.

Blocking off the EGR doesn't hurt anything as long as you don't have a vacuum leak, or a leak between exhaust and intake side.

Hope that helps.

Alright well after working on it for 13 hours. With 4 trips to autozone here is what I got. After a carb fire, and filling the motor with water getting the fire out.(had to pull the plugs and crank it over so water would drain)

The EGR blockoff wasn't leaking out the sides but it was leaking inbetween the two ports. One of my buddies gave me a factory 4 barrel intake off a 71 c-10.So I swapped that on.

It wont start at all now.I replaced the coil.It is firing. It's getting fuel.I am pretty sure the second time I got the distubitor messed up.So tommorow I am going to start all over on the timing.I quit whenever it gave a loud backfire.(sounded like a shotgun)

For the carb I put a new powervalve in it.And new needle and seats.New gaskets and o-rings.

Talk about agravating. The same guy that gave me the intake is selling me an hei distubitor friday. So I am going to swap that in and hopefully that will help to.

Well I finnally got it to run today.I got the timing close. My stupid light wont work.So I am going to have to buy another one tommorow.

Here is what it is doing now.It wont start unless I choke it.Then it will fire for a sec then I have to unchoke it and it will start. This is very annoying.Really anoyying because it will die when slowing down.I am thinking the floats aren't set right. There is a guy in town that is really good with carbs I am going to have him rebuild it tommorow.I am also getting an HEI distrubitor tommorow to.Hopefully this will help also.I am so frustrated right now I can't belive it.I acctaully drove a 1/4 tank of gas through it.

I am thinking the carb needs rebuilt and I need some ignition work.Right now it is patheticly slow.I don't get it and I am getting tired of trying to get it.

Any help would be so so awesome!
