I'm sure it has the computer in it. My 85 does! You must be carefull with mods, some will not make the computer happy. Talk to a reputable cam company tell them your info. They can match a cam to work with your computer.

The computer controls mainly the mixture control in the carb and the timing advance.

Read this thread five7kid explains well. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=178394

Yes, it has a computer controlling the idle and mid range fuel mixture, and the timing. As for giving you trouble, you can give it quite a bit before it chokes up. Mine is doing fine so far, and I have nearly doubled the horsepower! I think my cam is on the borderline of causing problems though!

The stock heads flow like stock heads! Not all that well.

I bought my 84 with the same engine in it about 5 or so years ago with about 160,000 miles on it and now the car has almost 217,000 on it! There hasn't been much go wrong with it either. The only major thing was the rearend, and I happened to pick one up for practically free! The engine was still running strong (for a LG4 305!) when I pulled it to put the 355 in!

I recommend buying it if the price is right!

Welcome aboard.

My donor car was an '86 SC. My car is more that than it is '82 now.

The stock heads respond well to porting and valve spring upgrade. Increasing the intake valve to 1.94" is another popular improvement. If you put in a cam with healthy lift, then consider converting the press-in rocker studs with screw-in. I handled all of those issues by getting World Products S/R Torquer 305 heads.

Exhaust and air cleaner upgrades are must-do items. Even if you don't do anything else to the engine, those two are big performance restrictions. The L69 dual-snorkel air cleaner (becoming harder to get) and '86-'90 TPI single-cat application exhaust goodies (headers, cat, & cat-back) are good ways to address those issues.

Since it is a computer-controlled engine, sticking to computer-compatible cams is a good idea. Mine idles at 500 RPMs in drive, and pulls to 5500 easily - it will rev to 6300 if you ask it (that's about 90 MPH in 2nd with my gearing). A higher stall torque converter is a good idea if you go over about 210 degrees duration @ .050" lift with the cam.

If you get the engine to rev higher than it does now (i.e., cam & exhaust upgrades), then the ignition becomes the weak link. Distributor module and coil upgrades take care of that.

Then there's the ever-popular "bore kit" - aka "350 block".

also check RPO codes in the arm rest compartment.

Found out my 86 sc had 3.23 gears instead of the usual 2.73

Also Rpo codes will tell you about your chassis, sway bars, springs, brakes, etc. My SC had about the worst parts in this area when I got it.

Look for "1LE"
