86 LG4 Carb

Hi-
I've never done a carb job, however, I've read plenty on the job, and what carb to pick. I wouldn't swap my Q-jet out, but it "needs rebuilding", plus I really want to have SOMETHING not stock under the hood. Anyway, I have a couple of questions I would REALLY appreciate having answered:

1) Will too much CFM be bad for power? I know it would be for gas mileage, and any sort of economy, but if I chose a 750cfm over a 650cfm, would I notice a significant decrease in power?

2) I'm pretty sure I have a manual choke, but I would just like to verify this. (4bbl LG4 w/ 700R4)

3) Do I need to pay attention to something that mentions EGR or not, I read some parts that specifically mentioned "for use with an EGR". Does anyone have a place I can go to see what EGR is?

4) Is the job straightforward- Do I just note the linkage positionings, pull off the old carb + gasket, put on a new one + gasket, attach linkages, adjust idle, and go?

I appreciate all of your help! Thank you!

1. I guess if you go way! To big it could

2. If you have a stock q-jet no you have electric choke and vacuum secondary

3. Do you have emissions? If no EGR is not needed and EGR refers to a valve on the manifold nothing to do with the carb.

4. Pretty much straight forward. If you are going with any aftermarket carb you will need a new distributor that’s not computer controlled and if you have the stock manifold I hear you will need a q-jet to square boar adapter?

why do you need a different distributor when you go to a aftetmardet carb. what sensor in the carb relates to the ingnition and the advance. just wondering because i just made the switch and am breaking in the engine.

From what i know they are both computer controlled and instead of vacuum advanced the disttributor is controlled buy the computer. the sensor in the carb is it called a TPS? the green wire in the top? i mean i maybe wrong but i thought you need to change distributors when you swap to an aftermarket carb (none cc)

If I was to put in a new carb without replacing the distributor, would it royall screw up the timing? Also, are there any tech articles anywhere I can read about what I'm trying to do with swapping out my Q-jet for something else? Thanks
