Fuel pump/new intake/running rich Q's
I thought I would throw all of my questions into one thread to make it easier and hopefully to get the most opinons.
1. I have a TBI fuel pump on my car with a mallory 3 port regulator, the fuel pressure moves around, after you set it, it will start moving, it will range from 0-8psi. I have read several posts saying that the TBI pump does this, and a few that say they dont. Regardless, mine does it, and it shouldn't. Should I switch to a different pump?
2. My car smokes blue, it was really really bad and using a lot of oil. I thought it was maybe the rings not seated yet, premature guide wear or a leaky intake gasket and sucking oil up from the lifter valley. I changed the oil which was horrilby dirty and broke down with fuel. It doesn't smoke hardly at all now. If i rev it up while it's in park or it sits and idles for a while it will smoke some but not as bad. After I came home from work today I decided to tune on the carb some and check for vacuum leaks. I can only get 9inchs maybe 10 inchs of vacuum out of this cam, and in a 406 i should be getting about 12 I think. I sprayed carb cleaner on the intake ports and it jumped up to 11inchs and the engine smoothed out. I have 220cc intake ports on my heads and use a 1205 or 1206(I can't remember, its the bigger of the two)intake gasket. The intake I have now is a holley street dominator which has been portmached to a stock style gasket. You can see the blue silicone stripe on the outside of the intake, so I know it can't be sealing correctly. Which intake should I use? I think a single plane would probably kill my low end, but without testing its hard to say for sure. I was thinking a RPM AIR Gap, but how big are the ports, will it seal a 1205/1206 gasket? I hope, that replacing the intake will up my engine vacuum and eliminate it burning oil.
3. The car smells rich constantly. After you get on it the smell is bad, when you are just crusing you can smell it. Also, when the car is cold, it will not run, AT ALL. My friend has a poncho 455 with a DP and no choke, and his will run when its freakin 15 degrees outside after about 30-60 seconds of high idle. The carb I have on my car now, 750DP came from his car and it never did this stuff on his. Can it be from the leaky intake gasket? and when it warms up the intake seals better? Before I changed the oil it would smoke reallllllllly bad in the morning, which I thought was valve guides, even though the heads are new. After I changed the oil. I started it this morning and no smoke. I was happy. I have 74/81 jets in it(five7kid recemmend them a long time ago) 31/28 squirters, I think I have the lazy pump cam in there, and no idea about the PV. It smokes black at WOT, along with some blue for good measure.
I drove it today and didn't hardly smoke at all, but you could sure smell it, and it doesn't smell like oil, it's gas.
I know I have several problems right now, but wanted some thoughts on them. Sorry this was so long. I appreciate any replys.

Your problem with the intake is most certainly the intake gaskets. They are probably just not in the right position. Too high maybe since the silicon part is showing. Another clue is the vacuum issue. If you can spray carb cleaner on the edge and the vaccum goes up you have a leak.
You should be able to use the intake you have. You may very well be getting the exhaust smell from the leaking intake gaskets as well as the smoke, especially if the oil is leaking into the intake ports. I would pull the intake and get another set of gaskets for it. Make sure you use plenty of gasket sealer in the front and back where the side gaskets meet the front and back gaskets also. Make sure not to overtighten the intake either because that can cause leaks also.

I have had the intake off before. The 1205/1206 gasket is bigger than the intake. The gaskets are set exactly where they are supposed to be on the heads and aling with the ports.
I am sure they are causing all sorts of problems.
Is it possible the intake has been milled and is sitting to far down? I tried to putting my stealth intake on it last year and if I remember correctly, the gasket was showing on it too. Maybe I will get a pic tomorrow.
