Harmful idle?
Harmful idle?(moderators?)
Ok fellas, the basics first. I've got a Holley 750 DP w/ manual choke, manual secondaries on a high performance 355.
I've done some searching and can't quite find what I'm looking for
in perticular. My idle as of now is set at 750 in gear 950-1000 in park. I want to lower the idle to about 550-600 in gear 750-800
in park.My question is, will doing so hurt the engine at all?!
I read in one post that it wouldn't but I need more opinions
I can't afford to blow this engine toooo much money in it!
Thanx y'all. DUECE

Adjust it to idle as low as you can, won't hurt a thing if adjusted properly.
Too high an idle will do more harm, slamming the drivetrain when you put it in gear. At the levels you're talking, though, no particular cause for concern.

Lower the idle speed with the screw that the throttle arm rests on at idle.
Adjust the idle mixture screws for maximum manifold vacuum at idle (in gear if auto).

Any recommendations? Fairly new to carbs. What would the outcome be if I only adjusted the idle and refrained from the mixture screws. Any way this could be easier?or seek professional help. Dunno I think most you guys are professional.
I'd appreciate some know how thanks,DUECE

if the idle is set too low, wouldn't the car have a hard time warming up each morning? Maybe its just my car, but it seems kinda cold blooded, and just seems like it would stall out too much when its cold.
Five7kid- I adjusted the idle aproximately 1/4 turn counter-clock
wise and my idle dropped to 750ish-800 in park/600 in gear.
That's basically the point I originally wanted to set at.
However, I didn't alter the idle mixture screws and I found I am
getting better acceleration! Is it possible my idle may have been set too high for my vaccum?! Dunno chime in any thoughts.
Thanx, DUECE
