distributor questions
ok im currently in the middle of a TBI to non-cc carb swap on a '90 305. I need to know what OE replacement distributor i can use thats vaccum advance? (preferably one from Advanced Auto or some place?) 74-83 is what i read that will work, should i jus get one for an older camaro? also do i need a new wiring harness and ignition module? or can i jus hook up the thick pink wire from the ignition to the Batt terminal and the thin white to the tach>? i have everything else setup and ready to go, i need to get my car moving soon cuz its a daily driver for me so im planning on setting up right now with the older non-cc distributor and saving up till i have enough money and time to install an MSD complete iginition system, thanks for your time guys i know u can help me. - jon

75-81 is safe. Not all 74's were HEI, and not all 82-83's were non-computer controlled.
Have you checked the units available from Summit or Jegs? They're made for performance, have the "good" coil & module (and adjustable vacuum advance), for little more than what you'd pay at a parts store for a "regular" unit that may not be complete.
Sounds like you've got the wiring correct.

I agree with five7. Look into the summit/jegs distributors. I picked up my Mallory HEI for like 150ish. It is compkete vacuum advance with coil. Its a good budet distributor.

You're right about 81's.
Still think the new aftermarket is the better choice.

yeah, I agree with the others. If you end up finding an OEM unit to use it's liable to need a new vacuum advance unit as well as new advance weight return springs and such, just due to age. I say just pick up a new Accel or Mallory unit and drop it in, then you have no worries about how it's going to perform, you know it's all brand new! If you do need to go OEM (for budget reasons or whatever) the age range they already told you sounds right. you're definitely safe with anything pre-'80's.....good luck!!

A used factory distributor is going to need a new cap & rotor, period. I wouldn't run somebody else's junk under any circumstances. And, I'd insist on brass terminal parts, not the cheap aluminum discount parts store stuff. Add $30 to the price of your used dist.
Factory coils were just plain weak - lame, really. Add another $35-70 for a good aftermarket piece. Ditto for factory control modules.
You're already at a minimum of $100 just for what you've paid above and beyond the distributor itself. If you want the advance kit, and the vacuum can is shot, you're over the price of a new unit that already has all the good stuff.
You should be paid for taking a used factory HEI off of somebody's hands.
