Rochester Quadrajet

I present my list of gripes with the hope that someone can offer a fix-all solution....

First start of the day - forget pumping the pedal and letting her run - she starts fine, but runs for about 3 seconds before stalling out. If I feather the gas, (just pumping or flooring stalls it), the RPMs will climb and I can keep it running with my foot on the gas.

The idle seems pretty strong once it's running. However, when I get to a light, I can watch it slowly lose strength and die out on me. I have to throw it into neutral to avoid stalling. I know it's supposed to be worse when I'm running all my accessories, but it doesn't seem to matter. Some days it's really bad and will stall at every light - others, I can be running everything and it will run fine.

Then we have my favourite - never knowing when she wants to go. There are times I can floor it and snap my head back. Other times, I floor it and it bogs. Other times, it's just a gradual acceleration regardless of whether or not the pedal is on the floor. The cool air of the evening is always better for acceleration, but even that doesn't always help.

So what gives? The carb was rebuilt a number of years ago, but I only drive her in the summer. Carb cleaner has been tried - I know the choke is the likely culprit for the starts in the morning, but should I be looking for a vacuum leak? Anything else? I've scanned a lot of the prior posts, but maybe this is familiar to someone with the LG4 Quad....

LG4 quadrajet eh? Looking at your mos (cam in particular), you don't have much in common with an LG4 anymore...

Just to be clear, this is the q-jet on that souped up engine right?

Have you made any mods to the carb then? It probably won't run right due to the duration of the cam.... (list spec if you know it...)

EDIT: You have the duration listed, geez, i'm slow this morning...

First of all, when it's running, hot, can you check the manifold vacuum level? This is a computer controlled carb, with a computer controlled (stock) distributor right? (just getting the easy stuff out of the way first...)

What is the hot idle RPM, when it'll idle?

I won't tell you to check your A/V tension or anything, 'cuz I think it's due to a stock carb on a fairly highly modded motor, but with some more info we can tell you what you need to do to your carb...

ooops, from Saskatchewan, my bad.... So no computer controlled stuff then, that makes things slightly easier...

Also let me know what your timing is, if you've made any changes as well....
