tbi to carb
ok,please be patient with me.i'm alitle confused.i did a search and can't find exactly what i need to do.or atleast to the point where i understand it.duno maybe i'm stupid.i've been goin back and forth on carb and efi.i'm leaning towards carb b/c its seems easier and has a cleaner look under the hood.
here's an e-mail i sent to the engine builder that i plan on goin with.its a 383 stroker with a mech f/p.
hi matt.jay again
i had a ? if you don't mind.i've got an 88 formula and as you know i'm getting the carbed 383.now how do i deal with the fuel and cpu in the car.i would like to stay with an electric pump, but if its easier and won't hurt anything i'll go with the machanical pump.but how do i address the cpu and fuel pump and the return fuel to the tank. i'm guessing a 3 way fuel pres regulator. but the cpu thing really confuses me.i was hoping you had some lit on the conversion from tbi to carbed.i'm hopping i don't have to get a mini tpi engine, but if you think that is best,i trust your call.thanks alot.jay.
his reply: Hi Jay, you can take the wire harness and tuck it up under the fender with some wire ties. Pull the fuse on the electric fuel pump and you can run the mechanical fuel pump.
Thank you,
Matt
what he wrote is vaige at best.can u guys help me out.will have to put bigger fuel lines in.the motor is rated at 450 flwhl.thanx alot.jay.

Normally when switching from tbi to carb you can use the in tank pump. A carb can handle that pressure. With your motor pushing 450 that pump will be borderline. You could probably try it and if it can't handle it you'd have to upgrade. As far as the return line you can use a return style regulator or you can just cap it off it's not needed really.
You should switch to the old style HEI ignition or an aftermarket setup like MSD and you won't need your cpu for anything at all. I've done this swap in TPI and TBI cars so don't hesitate to ask me any questions.
