DD rods - too rich for practical use?

I just installed a K hanger an DD rods in my Q-jet. Power was definetly there! I then looked up the specs on 'em in the tech articles, and they are noted as to saying not to be used in race applications?

Why is that?

I am going to be putting this vehicle on the dyno in January, and will drag it around the same time more than likely. Should I double-think having these rods in there when that time comes?

Thanks

-Bobby

Not too rich- too lean. They're the leanest set of rods ever produced for a QJet. (The bigger the diameter of the rod the leaner it is- exactly the opposite of a jet change- and no, the jets on the secondary side of a QJet are not changeable).

The DDs were factory installed on alot of 140 FWHP 307 oldsmobile engines. My cadillac included. They did use a F-Hanger though which I robbed. I took the F hanger, put DR rods on if from my G20 then put it onto the Q-Jet in the G20. I took another set of DR rods, put the K-hanger from my G20 and then modified the secondary air valves to open 90* on the cadillac. Woke both engines up pretty decently!

I found a few sets of those rods... They're like fingers, they're HUGE!!! useless rods IMHO, they'll starve the engine like crazy.

YEP!

After adding a high flow cat, quiet lower restriction muffler and 2 1/2" exhaust, a stock 307 HO roller cam, and lightly porting my 7A castings for my 1988 307 the DDs had to go. We are talking maybe 170 HP at the flywheel and they were killing the power in it.

Wow, well I guess I'll be playing around with rods some more! lol. I guess I was totally mis-comprehending the rod chart.

so all LL type rods are bad then? You want to get the closest to "s" you can get?

what size of rods would you all suggest for my setup? It has a mild RV cam (dont know specs), 305 heads so probably 9:1 compression or something (I just bought the long block and stuck my own intake on there to get it running lol). ZZ4 intake, SLP 1 5/8" headers, high flow cat, hooker cat-back.

No real "performance" mods other than that so to speak.

I am currently running the single snorkel intake seeing as I am having a heck of a time with a open element, and cant find dual snorkels anywhere within my price range.

Coming soon: Port and Polished 416's w/ 1.94's and 1.6's, manley streetflow valves, and Comp XE268h cam

Hoping to blow up something on the dyno, but am obviously not going to do that with these DD rods! lol.

With Hangers, it's the lower the letter the better, right? Or is that the other way around? lol.

One of the best all-around sets of rods is the "DR" rods used in factory L-69 HO 305 engines. They will work just great for what you have planned.

LL tip rods are not what you want for performance (they are all too lean) but that doesn't mean all S tip rods are good. You just want something that's got the proper tip diameter for best WOT/full air valve opening performance that is still pretty rich on the taper as well for snappy throttle response.

DRs are about the best "middle of the road" performance rod, and work great on most modest street performance small blocks. If you want something richer than that the best choice would be a set of DA rods. If you wanted to go leaner from there the best choice would be a set of DP rods.

With those 3 rod sets you've got about 95% of all street performance V8 applications covered.

DRs and DAs were both factory equipment in LE9 305 powered chevrolet vans and trucks too.

I have a set of each. Plus tons more.

sellmanb, you are planning on an almost identical setup as my 327! i have some 70's 305 heads w/ 1.94 valves, a non-rpm performer intake, and an xe268 cam. i like it so far, now all i have to do is get it on the road.

Heh, I'm hoping to put out right around 300ft /lbs of torque, probably at a low RPM so HP is nothing to brag about :-P.

Any more than that and I'll do a hop, skip and jump for joy. lol

On another note. I put in K hangers and DR rods. Doesnt run as bad and starts up a lot easier now. Though now I've got more problems than which rods to pick out (lets just say I've bought my 3rd motor for this vehicle just today)

junkyard.

Someone might sell you some online. I think edelbrock makes a few, maybe not DR or DA though.

thanks. if i were to buy a rod from edelbrock , what would the recomendation be. they dont sell DR or DA rods . or at least i cant find them if they do.
i read another thread that edelbrock CH are pretty close to DR's. would that be a good choice or not. what is the difference?

i just bought a B hanger to go with whatever rods i get

I think CH is what I found on basically every stock LG4 in the junkyard. CH and CV's. Seriously, raid a JY, you'll get gobs of selection.

But for your stock LG4, I think stock parts will probably work the best, until you get some mods.
