Needing a new intake what do you guys reccomend?

Ive been wanting to upgrade the intake on my truckmaro's engine. Right now it's got a ZZ4 peice on it and it seems to choke it quite a bit on the high side. The engine is a 383, 10:1 with a crane energizer 272 and a Q-Jet on top. Right now the intake is on it last leg, I had the machine shop true it up but it's starting to leak antifreeze again.

I was leaning toward a Performer EPS and using my Q-jet adaptor on it what do you guys think?

I was always under the impression that adapters kill airflow. Don't know if there's a QJet specific manifold from edelbrock, like a Performer RPM Airgap or a Victor Jr. that you could throw on there, but those are options.

Spreadbore RPM. Not available in Air Gap last I checked.

Or, do you need EGR?

Actually Ive made an adaptor that doesent prohibit flow. No EGR or anything like that needed. I went with the ZZ4 intake striclty because I beleiverd the EGR would increase fuel economy which it dident over the Action+. So I'm looking for power now since fuel economy over 8-10 MPG isnt going to happen EGR or not.

The air gap seems kinda $$$. Is it worth the extra $? I dont have any heat soak issues now that the cowl hood is on of course the truckmaro has always had plenty of airflow under the hood. Would it make that much difference over the standard RPM?

Well I got a new intake. I just went with the Performer RPM. I should have it installed in a couple days since its too cold to work in my garage at the house and the rear bay door at the shop busted a spring last night so I cant get my truck in there without fixing the cars torn down in the front bay. I guess I'm goin to spend my weekend christmas shoping instead.

I think you'll be happy with the performer rpm. I may end up going to that from my victor jr if I don't like it.

Yeah that Performer rpm should do just fine. I just moved one of those monster motors into an 86 and I had a torker ll on it when it was in the one ton van. I used this van to tow sound gear trailer at high rates of speed on the interstate, so the Torker was just fine. When I moved it to a car with a 4 speed auto rather than the th350, I came to the conclusion that I needed a lower rpm manifold. I had a squarebor carb and was really happy to see the newer performer EPS. It works great with the new setup and the bottom end is really usefull with the long gears these camaros have. The engine still has plenty of top end rpm cause it was built that way and I have gained a good amount of torque. Makes for an economy gain I was not looking for, or expecting.

Bet yours will show a fuel use improvement also.

No, I got it on last thursday or so. It's hard to remember, Ive been sick. I knew I was comming down with somthing when I was installing the intake. I got it tunned last night typical SBC 1 tooth off when re-installing the dizzy which dident allow me to set timing back to where it was with the ZZ4 for a true comparison.

Now granted all my senses are screwy since Ive got one ear completly plugged up but it does feel more ballzy lugging around the streets. I took her up above 6k once and it did feel smoother but I havent got a chance to drive it in the area where the ZZ4 was lacking. In essence I acheived the most important goal being the coolant leak has stopped.

I also ended up getting some 1.6 roller rockers so I had to get taller valve covers so the intake doesent look quite as impressive as it did at first After a few weeks of the factory single snorkle air cleaner + a K&N filter I went back to a 14 X 5 Accel filter setup which improved fuel economy quite a bit. For some reason the K&N/OEM setup was just choking the engine and making it run rich no matter what I attempted tunning wise.

Edelbrock #2601

Not sure if you know or not but Edelbrock also makes the Air Gap in the Performer series, (not RPM). This manifold (#2601) will except ether a square bore carb or a Quadra jet.

SSC, are you using a stock f-bird hood with your setup? Also, is that a drop base air cleaner? I was just wondering since I plan to swap a V-8 into my Iron Duke '82 Bird.

Actually this is in my 76 pickup, thats why the big ol Accel air filter fits.

My 82 bird in my Avitar has a TA PB hood which is the same height as a stock hood. But if you plan on this combo for your bird the spread bore RPM with a Q-jet will fit with a cheapo 14 X 3 drop base setup with the small 1/2in plastic adaptor ring. Or you may be able to score an OEM BBC drop base setup which will clear all but a Predator. If you plan on using a Holley or Edelbrock carb on a squarbore RPM you dont need the adaptor ring but a banjo type fuel inlet is required for maximum clearance. Of course with any of these the insulation must be removed from the hood for the extra 1/4in of space.
