Carb Storage

I have a near new 770 Holley that is in use right now but in a couple weeks its going to be removed and stored indoors for about a year. I dont want the fuel residue to make the carb go sour.


I was thinking of running it dry on the car, then possibly running some sort of alcohol through it to clean it out.

I already did a search and couldent find what I was looking for.

Any suggestions world be awesome!

You could fill/rinse it with transmission oil or two-cycle oil and bag it. If you simply rinse the carb with some highly volatile solution (like gasoline or alcohol) there may still be some residue left. Drying of the seals and diaphragms may be a problem as well. Rinsing it with an oil may solve some of those potetial problems.

The last Holley and carb intake I removed is still sitting on a shelf, just like it was removed, collecting dust. Makes a great paperweight/door stop.

Don't use alcohol. It will start corroding the metal.

I would use a combo lube/solvent like PB-blaster to clean it out good. Be sure to get all the air bleeds. Then I'd use a light machine oil on the whole thing inside and out.

i run my carb dry every fall and fill with WD-40 until spring no issues yet, just pour it down the vent tubes until it's full

Been doing the WD-40 for 4 seasons, run carb dry by shutting off electric fuel pump, or if using mechanical pump just unbolt carb and dump out the fuel.

Stick the WD40 straw down the vent tubes and fill till she comes out, work the butterfly until you see the wd start coming out the squirters and your done.

4 years, same carb that sits from end of Oct to end of march first part of april (or when roads clear off), it will smoke a bity when you start it up the next time, but it will work as good as the day you removed it-which could be good or bad depending on when you took it off

Right on! Thanks again for the tips, I'll be doing that over the weekend. Im running a mechanical pump so maybe i'll just pinch off the rubber fuel line before the fuel pump until it dies.....

I have had good luck with Marvel Mystery Oil. It is engine friendly as well. Does a real good job keeping the gaskets from drying out.

err...i would just disconnect the feed line completely...
