If you're using your ccc-qjet, and cc-distributor, with the 4 wire prong unplugged (i'm guessing you've swapped over your lg4 type of harness stuff?), then set it to 4* or so.

Why on earth would you remove the TPI setup on an L98 and go to a cc-qjet?

cause the guy who swapped my engine screwed me over. he charged me darn near 900 dollars to swap the motor in with carb, but he told me the price would be well over a 1000 if i kept the tpi setup. thats cause he quoted the swap at only 450 dollars. also my car was originally ccc, i bought the motor from a wrecked iroc and had it swapped in, so my harness an d distributor were set up for the ccc setup. my car is an 84 z28.

gotcha.

then I guess you can set the timing to whatever the engine tends to run best with. You can start with 4* advanced, and bump it up from there. Not sure if your setup kept the knock sensor, and would self correct for that...

hmm, I just thought that the cc-dist used inputs from a knock sensor, such that if you bumped up your timing too much, and got greedy, and the motor started to ping, it backed it down for you. I don't know much about the cc-setup.

You are running the same carb and dist as you had on your 305 right? You're just re-calibrating them to work with your new 350 right?

I guess try a few degrees more then the 305 had, and if you notice any pinging, back it back down.

Probably want slightly skinnier secondary rods on the q-jet too.

yeah, same carb and dizzy. the stock setting was 6 btdc for an lg4 if i remember correctly. should i go higher than that? i think that was also the base setting for the tpi.

For the record: LG4 didn't get knock sensor until 1985 model year; Some LG4's base timing was as low as zero degrees.

Run the timing that runs the engine the best.

set it somewhere between 5-6. car seems to be a lot smoother now. when i first checked it with the light it looked to be around 10 or higher and i had pinging.
