Carb Problems - Fuel Pressure?
1992 RS, 350 installed with in-tank pump, Mallory 4309 Regulator (not hooked to vacuum source), brand new Edelbrock 1405 carb, timing set at 11*BTDC.
I was having an issue with not being able to get a steady, "stay in place for more than a day" idle - somedays was 500rpm, some days 1100rpm, no matter what I did. Figured carb needed rebuilt, so I just got another one brand new). This solved the idle issue, but...
After install, when cornering or making circles (like at a cul-de-sac), the car wants to die, like it ran out of fuel - tank is full. I was told to check & readjust floats - did that per Edelbrock instructions. Made it better, but didn't cure it - still wants to die when cornering at idle (foot on brake, circling cul-de-sac).
I was looking under the hood at some things, and I noticed my FP guage - when I left the driveway, it was at 5.5psi with car running at idle. After I returned, shut car off, and restarted it, it was at 2psi. So I went to adjust it up, but nothing I do changes the fuel pressure - I can even remove the set screw while it's running, and push down on the spring and piston inside, and nothing changes - UNTIL I turn key off and restart - then sometimes it will be different. The FP guage is the nice liquid-filled Summit one, reads from 0-30psi. I haven't noticed any acceleration problems - seems to run fine, just dies when cornering.
Questions:
1) set screw on Mallory 4309 - turn in or out to increase pressure?
2) why no pressure changes when adjusting? fuel pump bad? filter clogged?
3) pressure regulator toast maybe? I just bought it 6 months ago - it might have 700 miles on it as I haven't went very far trying to get this car to run.
I'll replace fuel filter - test what else and how?
