Warning on Clear sight plugs!!!

AED has posted an urgent warning about clear site plugs being affected by a fuel formulation change on the East Coast. This is for the aftermarket replacement clear float screw plugs for Holley's.

AED is one of the largest aftermarket suppliers of Carburator parts in North America to the professional tuners.

*** Important Notice 4/26/06 : It has come to our attention that in the northeast US there might be some new fuel additive in pump gasoline that is affecting the rigidity of clear view sight plugs. Not just ours, but everyone's. The sight plugs may become soft & possibly leak fuel . If in doubt replace them with brass sight plug screws. At this time racing fuel, alcohol, or conventional gas has not created problems. It might even be ethanol related & this fuel might even be used in other parts of the country. We will pass along any additional info as it becomes available.

When I got my used 650DP in late '03, it had clear sight plugs from the previous owner. I hadn't disturbed them until this spring, when I put a kit in the carb (now with the Proform mainbody). I didn't want to soak the plugs in the carb cleaner, so I started backing them out - the threads stayed in the bowl, the material from the threads to the main bulb of the plug was goo.

I have never had the car in the Northeast. I've always used pumpgas 91 octane, the previous owner of the carb used race gas.

I replaced them with new Holley-card clear sight plugs. I'm using E85 now, as far as I know it doesn't have any "exotic" additives in it.

...Other than the ethanol, that is. . .

ethanol does have adverse effects to those things. so do some fuel additives.. I had a set that went all goo on me when i started using the 10% ethanol stuff.. not MN wants to do 20% and 10% in everything

I had to replace the clear sight plugs on my Holley Street Avenger the first 2 years I had it. I looked on Holley's site last year for directions for the carb and see they now tell you the sight plugs are for tuning only and should not be left in the carb.

I like my Demon so much better with the glass sight plugs that are C-clipped in.

Maybe I'll be putting the brass plugs back on. . .

I finally pulled mine back off a couple of weeks ago. They were fine. But, at least I know I'll have them available if I want/need them.
