Timing on a Chev 400

I have had my motor set up for a while now and it runs good but I still feel like the timing is off.

What should the inital timing be set at for a stong 400 running 92oct?
What should the total timing be set at?
I know there are lots of variables but i'm just trying to get a feel for where I should really start to get it dialed in.

I still need to change the springs in the dist., but I'm not exactly sure which ones to use. (MSD pro billit)

Timing is not my strong point so if anyone can offer up some advice or numbers I would appreciate it. Thanks

Well it looks like I have dug up some info to go off of.

I'm going to try setting the inital timing at around 12 and the total timing at around 36.

To do this I think I will use a light silver spring and a light blue spring. I will also probably use either the Silver or Blue bushing. Using those springs should allow me to start the advance curve at 1500rpm and have it fully advanced at 3000rpms.

sounds like you're on the right track. 36* total is your main point to hit, your base timing is just whatever keeps the car idling the best, with no off the line bogs.
