Holley or Edelbrock??

I've got an 86 with a 305, Holley Street Dominator intake, and Edelbrock 795cfm carb. Can't remember part # on carb, bit it's the Qjet replacement. I've had minor tuning problems, but it seems fine now. Problem seems to be in the choke, but i'm not too worried. I was thinking about a smaller carb though. Somewhere in the neighborhood of a 600 or a 650, but don't know if I should go with a Holley or Edelbrock. I hear pro's and con's for both from my friends. Just thought I'd get some extra input. Are the Holley's that hard to keep tuned?? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

If your looking for bolt on and go id probably get an edelbrock. Holley has the street avenger that is like that. I have a 660 holley sa on my iroc and it is pretty horrible. I really dont recommend it at all.

I had a 670 street avenger, and I didn't like it at all. I sold it for an Edelbrock Performer 600 and jetted that up. While the Edelbrock is better then the Street Avenger ever was, I still wish I had gone with a carb with Mechanical Secondaries, espescially in my 5 speed.

If I were you I'd go with something like a 600 DP.

'dominator intake', is different than a stardard flange?
not sure if that is an issue.

both brands of carbs need tuning, to operate
their best. both brands have their advocates.

Edels use metering rods instead of a power valve,
superior, IMO.
Edels use primaries, that are smaller than the secondaries,
IMO, superior for a street car
Holley people contend that the 'air demand valve' in the Edels can cause a delay in the opening of
the secondaries. You have to decide for yourself
how important that is.

If you decide on Edel, consider the Thunderer series
with spring-adjustable air valve, better IMO.

Bigger than a 305 needs, basically an over-priced Holley vacuum secondary. SA's are made for marketing, not performance.

yeah, the street avenger sucks. if all you want is drivability, then just run an edelbrock 1406, which is the 600cfm version. if performance is what you are looking for, then a 600 holley double pumper is in order here. don't even bother with the holley vacuum secondary carbs.

i've decided to go with the edelbrock 1406. haven't ordered it yet, but i'm going to try and get it some time next week. i'm hoping the 600 will give me a little better performance than the 795 which i think is too big for the motor that's there. i'm also hoping to score a couple mpgs. everyone i talk to about the holley's say it's hard to keep it tuned properly and i don't want to be under the hood every weekend on my daily driver.

Technically, that is completely untrue. The two carbs use completely different concepts to accomplish the same operations.

Practically, the two carbs are both demand-based secondaries (although the way they operate to "demand" is completly different). What it comes down to, is this: If you don't get a Holley double-pumper, keep the q-jet. The primaries are smaller than either the Holley or Performer, the secondaries are demand-based pretty much like the Performer, and it will be no "bigger" than the engine needs when you floor it.

Having used both the Qjet and Edelbrock I'd say six of one and half a dozen of the other. Qjets are truly excellent when tuned correctly. 1406s also deliver really nice performance. One thing I have noticed is that the 1406 is more consistent in the mpg it delivers. The Qjet is fine there, too, but seemed to vary somewhat more than my current 1406.

If I already had a Qjet then I'd stick with it because the 1406 is not superior in performance or mpg.

it's possible since the larger booster signals will require more fuel, even on a smaller cubic inch motor.
