I want to convert my 84 ta from an electronic carb to a regular carb like a carter or edelbrock...what will I have to do to make this possible
If I understand correctly all I have to do is swap the carb onto my intake and put a regular HEI vacuum advance distributor on it....Please help...

What transmission does it have?

Be prepared for disappointment.

If I'm not mistaken, Holley makes a quadrajet carb in three different stages that are direct replacements for stock quadrajets. Why don't you check 'em out. Summit has them.

I've done it three different times now. the initial swap isn't that bad at all, it's the after work that sucks. All you need to complete the swap is a carb(usually 4 vaccum ports on the carb....PCV, brake, timing, intake) and A vaccum advance distributor. When you finish take the computer control Q Jet and throw it as far as you can...you'll do the world a favor. depending on your situation and your setup you can usually start to remove all the useless stuff you don't need anymore. like some extra vaccum lines...but like I said, all depends on your car. If you've got any questions just PM me and i'll try to help ya out.

That's about the worst advice I've ever seen posted on this Board.

I agree. Q-jets are the s#!t. If they weren't, why would Holley still be making them?

C'mon you can fix lock up with a piece of wire found on the garage floor.. unless you're already using the wire to fix your bad CTS

For the record, Holley doesn't make them, they rebuild them. Holley Performance Products
Holley Performance Products (easier to see if you save the .pdf to your computer and open it from there)

The "stage" rebuilds I've seen were from Jet Performance. Others may have copied it, but I don't see any indication that Holley is one that did.

this is very easy to do, very basic,

can do it in the dark after youve done one

swap the old style carb and hei in and remove the computer and entire harness

its real basic

lockup converter is the only issue, and the engine light being stuck on all the time afterwards

good luck

Holley and Summit both remanufacturer/rebuild q-jets. Correction, it is Jet Performer that makes them in three stages.

You can wire your converter lockup the right way with a vaccuum switch through the existing brake switch and wiring. There's a thread on here somewhere that has part numbers and instructions. Another alternative, although more expensive, is to purchase a kit from B&M or Painless.

You can swap the distributor out for an JY HEI unit (to save money). Same firing order..the rotors still spinning in the same direction.

Tell me why you want to swap?

Ok heres the latest...I can hold the choke flap almost closed and it will purr like a kitten...as soon as it opens it goes dead....
The car runs damn good for sitting as long as it has...I mean real good
This may be me being parinoid but when it is running and if I hold my hand behind the tail pipe....( like I was checking for exhaust flow thru muffler) the exhaust is so hot I cant even barely hold my hand there for a second literaly
and on all my other cars its not close to that hot...is it possible the cat is junk....It does have exhaust coming out good though.....but that may just be paranoia...hehe.....thanks....Dave

When you choke it, it runs better? Check all of your vaccuum lines, plug them at the carb if you have to and see if it runs better. Have you done basic tuneup stuff yet? Change plugs, O2 sensor, etc?
