Holley models with vacuum secondaries
Holley models with vacuum secondaries
Holley's website carb chooser says if your vehicle weighs more that 3100 lbs and you have a 383, you need a carb with vacuum secondaries. The suggestion for my car is the 730 CFM race carb. Is there a cheaper option that would work well?

The GM 383 crate engines both use a Holley 4160, 750 cfm carb. They use the same carb for their 340 hp and their 425 hp engines. I would assume that it would be a good choice. I would definitely go 750 cfm (I think the 4160 only comes in 750 cfm, and it is a street carb).
Their recommendation for the 383's that are non-turn key is for a 750 cfm carb, holley or quadrajet.
Their HT 383 is built for trucks in mind, and they usually weigh a little more than 3100 lbs...

I have a holley 3310-s 750 that I might be interested in selling.
It is modified somewhat for racing or hot steet use. I removed the choke flap and choke for more air. I also installed a Quickfuel adjustable vaccum secondaries. You just turn a screw, not replace the springs. It has a secondary metering block for jets instead of a plate. It also has rear notch float and jet extensions.
It is on my setup in my sig. You can go to my cardomain site and see some pics of it on the car. The times are in my sig also.
Just if you are interested!!

Theres no reason you can't use a mechanical secondary carb with that comb. I'll be using a 650 double pumper on my 350 in a 3200lb Z28. I know of a Trans Am that uses a 750 double pumper on a 400 in a 3800lb car, and it works great.
If you do want to stick with vacuum secodnaries though, use the 3310. Its a 4160-style VS carb, 750cfm. Do the secondary metering block conversion and get a 4150-style fuel line, and you'll have a really nice carb for the 383.
I think a Holley 4778 or 4779 (700cfm and 750cfm double pumper) would be faster though.
