Mounting alternator
Ok I'm almost done with my TPI to carb conversion here but I've run into a bit of a problem...
I can't seem to get my alternator mounted. I've swapped over to a V-belt style (i know, chew my head off, I might be switching back in the near future just not now) using parts I found off a carbed thirdgen (crank pulley, water pump pulley, alternator bracket) and went to transfer them over to my car. Everything worked out fine except the alternator bracket.
For some reason, It doesn't seem to match up quite right to my motor. The bracket itself didn't quite fit right from the water pump bolt hole to the intake bolt hole, it was slightly off. To remedy this, I went ahead and busted out the ol dremel to widen the hole. Now I can bolt the bracket in, but when I go to put in the alternator, its completely off.
Is there a special bracket to use so it fits on there right? Here is the one I'm using now (not exact, but it gives you an idea)

I used an OEM replacement for a 1980 Camaro(so, v-belt style). Maybe my problem? I really doubt it though, as I used the same setup on my last Camaro, which coincidentally was a 1984.

Is this what your water pump looks like?
There's another bracket that goes under the alternator, through which a long bolt goes through to the front of the head.

Thats the correct alt, but you are missing the lower bracket. In the first pic, on the lower left side of the water pump, there are two taps for the lower bracket. It is the L shaped piece in the lower part of the first pic you posted. Like 57kid said, there is a bolt about 5 inches long that goes through the L bracket and alt into the block. It also uses a spacer (the stock one bolted onto the alt) in between the alt and the block. If you need the exact measurements for both, let me know. You should be able to find a complete bracket kit (like the chrome one in the pic) for around $20 at your local parts store, or you can order just the lower piece from summit (pn TRD-9637, $8) or the whole kit (pn SME-2000 $60, billet aluminium with upper tie rod). I would suggest against using the Spectre kit with hardware because the hardware is all grade I. Who uses that stuff anyways??? Hope this helps,

The problem is, no matter how I manipulate the alternator, it won't line up with any bolt holes. As you can see in the pic I posted with the red line, that is the bolt hole going into the head that its supposed to line up with, but doesnt. Will that lower bracket get it in line somehow?

Put the lower bracket on the water pump, leave the bolts slightly loose. Then try it.
Picture 1 below is the '86 system on my Camaro. Only difference between mine and yours is the flat multi-groove belt & pulley (which I really like). You can see where it bolts to the back of the alternator.
Picture 2 is an '87 alternator. A little smaller, different electrical connector (probably the same as your original '90). The back of the bracket mounts to a different spot, but the "spacer" part is the same.

Curious which JY you got the stuff from. Been 21 years since I lived there, but spent more than a little time in yards off West O. Don't remember the names of them, though.
Also a little curious why your top bracket has "Mopar" on it. . .

ROFL
I was out at the Kendles junkyard over at SW 1st and W South street, over by capital machine.
And it says mopar because a buddy of mine thought that'd be funny to etch into it lol Hes a big mopar fanatic. It'll probably get sprayed over once we figure out how to correctly mount the alternator.

That would be a different yard than I went to. I lived in Air Park while going to the U. Oh, the memories.
Gotta be careful when you have Mopar "friends" hanging around your ride. Never know what they'll do.
Hope the pictures have been some help. A sharp eye would note that I have a flatwasher between the lower bracket/spacer and the alternator. The end faces of the World heads seem to be slightly back from the stockers, had to shim both sides for proper belt alignment. No problem with the top bracket, as it mounts between the intake and water pump.

Re: Mounting alternator
Despite his mopar fanaticism, he's been the biggest help with my project.
Whats the measurement of the spacer? I didn't have one, so I bought a universal 4" spacer from O'smilies, and looks like I need to cut to fit. An exact measurement would be easier than eyeballing it haha

Re: Mounting alternator
The stock one I have measures 3.5", but the aftermarket one measures 3.25". It also would depend on the head and water pump I suppose, since the variance of aftermarket pump specs on the hole height might vary. I would say you are best off measuring it out, adding 1/8 to 1/4" and going from there. Hope this helps some.

It's not just a spacer, it is also a brace for the back of the alternator. Gives it the "3-point support" that helps prevent shaking.
You should do what you can to find a proper piece.

Re: Mounting alternator
I'll look around for it.
I was just looking at the whole setup today and realized something... I have a 2 groove pulley setup (i got the water pump and crank pulley from the same donor car) but noticed my lower water pump hose is completely in the way of the first groove (closest to the block) I'm wondering if maybe I have the wrong pump, or I asked for the wrong one (i asked for an 84 305... i figured there was no differences)

The rear-most groove on the waterpump pulley is for the AC/PS belt. The rear-most groove on the crank pulley is for the PS belt. The alternator belt should be out of the way of the hose. (see my first pic - imagine the flat belt is your V belt)

Re: Mounting alternator
i personally dont use that bottom bracket just the single bolt and long spacer behind the alt...try working in reverse..use that spacer and bolt the alt to the block with only the bottom bolt..then bolt the bracket to the alt..and see how the other holes on the bracket line up to the water pump and manifold..i had to use some spacers to get everything to work out right..

Re: Mounting alternator
this is a bit off topic, but get some quality fuel lines for that demon.. or at least some hose clamps..
i know a demon is not the "best" carb in the world but it deserves more then rubber..
