It would work alright.
The factory put them in carb'd cars in the '87 model year. So, if you went to an on-line parts store like partsamerica.com, looked up a fuel pump for that year with a 305 VIN H, that's what would come up.
If you tried to put it in a tank that didn't originally have FI, you'd have to get a pickup for an FI application (probably from a junkyard).
A few years ago GM had a kit that put a ZZ4 crate engine into carb'd V8 Camaros. The kit included an in-tank pump and, of all things, a dead-head regulator. Not sure but I think it still used the engine-mounted mechanical pump with return.

i put a holley on my tbi truck and just bought a standard regulator for 30 bucks and blocked off the return line. it hasn't left me stranded yet.

I assume your Holley is an in-line type pump. If you do that, you need to drop the tank and take out the in-tank electric pump. If you don't, you'll make it that much harder for the pump to suck fuel out of the tank (and pumps don't like to suck).

Re: in tank fuel pump for carbs
that is why i was thinking an in tank pump.i have both styles of pickups, but with the in tank, the tank would'nt need an external sump(this will eventually be a hot street/strip car)

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it should be fine for a regularly street-driven car.
