I gots a problem..

hey all. i have a problem with my camaro. Its got a 350 with goodies headers etc.. my problem is.. car wont start when hot... i put the heat shield stuff around my starter still exists(still cranks slow).. i have a fuel filter with a sight glass when i shut the motor off (just ran till hot) there is no fuel in there once shut off and it wont start.. but when cold, pump twice and there is fuel in there..
IT starts up after about 30 minutes or so of cooling... and when it does flames fly outa the carb if i tryed startin it before would a carb shield help?: PS i have a fuel pump mounted to the block im assuming its stock... what type of gasket spacer do i need to space the fuel pump from the block a part number is great..

OK im going to try the remote Starter Solenoid mod tomorrow and ill report on how it goes..

Re: I gots a problem..

So when it's hot, is the problem that the starter cranks it too slowly, or does it crank nice and fast, but there's no fuel in the bowl?

It'd either be your starter is getting too hot, or you're getting a vapor lock sorta thing. Usually vapor lock would cause the car to stall out when running though, not just a no start issue.

Are you running a mech pump on the block only? No electric pump in the tank anymore? (it's been removed by you?) Is this a return style pump? Exhaust is a decent distance away from fuel lines, specifically near the passenger side header collector?

What's the starter like? Old stock one, new factory one, aftermarket etc? Usually this is what happens when the starter just starts getting old. Try a new mini starter, like the ones for LT1 cars. Assuming your battery is good, wiring from starter to battery is good, this should spin your motor over good and fast.

I wouldn't bother trying to space the fuel pump from the block, that's not the problem.

and when it does flames fly outa the carb
I'm not sure what to make of this. Timing is right? Make sure it's not super advanced.

Re: I gots a problem..

ah, you're just wiring it up wrong. You'll figure it out. I've never used one so...

I think your starter is just on it's last legs. When the engine is nice and cold everything is easy so it'll crank it over ok. A new starter, like a ministarter would work great. The remote solenoid might help for a bit, more like a bandaid though.

look up some threads about this in the past, sofakingdom has posted a few thoughts about our "stone age" technology starters vs the new style ones. I don't know enough about the inner workings to comment (my stock 305 one works great for my hot 350), but the new style ones are much better apparently.

Re: I gots a problem..

I got a CVR gear reduced one it is damn good and fast, my tach reads 400rpm when the car is cranking with no fuel.
My old one was screwed it would engage but the gear would just slip on the shaft and it went real slow when it was working (didn't read on the tach).

Re: I gots a problem..

havent so far, when the car use to overheat to 260'F i would shut it down and it will still throw it over without a problem.

EDIT: i needed to add the flywheel cover has to be cut abit to fit the mounting point for this starter because it has the holes to mount to all Big blocks and small blocks. (they use them in drag cars over here) so it has no problem cranking over a small block
