Engine hard to start when hot??

Have a little problem with my carb...It is an Rochester 4bbl carb that stands on my 87 Camaro...The engine is a 305cid....Original from factory so no tuning or anything...

I have this eletric choke on my carb...And when i have driven my car for a while so the engine have reached operating temperature the car idles great and everything is fine...But when i shut off engine (Hot). And make it stand still for about 10-15minutes or more...I have to crank the engine for over 5seconds and mayby more to start it....Anyone have an idea of what this could be??...Is it the choke that is "hanging" or anything else??...I have CCCS but no trouble codes are showing....

But if I just shut down my car and try to start it at once again, it starts perfectly....But like I said, if the engine have been shut of for 10-15minutes or more..I have troubles....anyone that could help me with this one??

Re: Engine hard to start when hot??

Ya know, I get that too sometimes. Cold start, flick the throttle once, and it starts fine. Run in to 7-11 and come back, and just crank it over, and it's fine.
But a 1hr break, so it's somewhat warm but not cold, sometimes it'll just crank over for a while. I think sometimes its because I tap the gas, and it somewhat floods it. So I hold the throttle open and crank it over so it clears it's throat. Or I might have leaking well plugs, but that wouldn't explain the perfect cold start. (Just epoxied my well plugs just to be safe).

Lets see if anyone else has any ideas?

An '87 has an in-tank electric pump to push fuel to the engine-mounted mechanical to prevent vapor lock.

If that's what's happening (vapor lock, that is), then the in-tank electric most likely isn't doing its job.

Re: Engine hard to start when hot??

Ok...So it it seems like the in-tank electric pump doesn't do it's job...But it is very rare that the car runs excellent all other times...At cold engine, and at warm engine...Just a little hard to start....But it sounds like it could be a problem like this...

I guess the easiest choice is to change the fuel pump then???

Re: Engine hard to start when hot??

Whoa, I'd spend a little more effort determining the culprit before swapping out the in-tank pump.

You can pull the feed line off the mech pump, crank the motor and the electric pump should push fuel through the line. The motor should run about a minute at idle from the fuel in the bowl. You can do the same test for the mech from the carb inlet line, should flow alot more than the electric pump.

Vapor lock is not impossible but is unlikely with the return style fuel system you have.

Re: Engine hard to start when hot??

Hmm, yea, I don't have the electric in tank pump, and my fuel lines run awfully close to my headers, but I figured the return style pump helps that out...
