could use some help
could use some help
so i just got a camaro its a 90 rs 305 5 speed with throdle body injection, anyways i got the need for more power i could care less about fuel econime i got a second car for that. i wish i had the money for a 350 but i don't so i'm a do a little something with what i have to hold me over.
so i wanna go carburated, so i'm going to need a new intake manifold a carborator and a distributer, i have plans for headers also. but anyways what's the good stuff like brands to go with, where to shop at, 4 barrel? cfm? for my setup. electric/manual choke can i elimanate the ecm alltogether this way? i like to keep it simple. some pointers or links to sites or good threads i may not have found are apreciated.
thanks,
justin

Justin,
Okay remember one thing, you officially want to go 350 or bigger SBC right?
So only buy things that will transfer over one day when you are ready to make the change.
I had a TPI motor and went carb myself, so I eliminated the ECM.
Exhaust- Headers and Y-Pipe, go with Hooker 2055's. It includes Headers with 1 5/8" primaries 3" Collectors and 3" all the way around Y-Pipe. They usually run $400 to your door for the whole setup.
Some exhaust setups are cheaper but this setup is top notch, so save up and buy the best now, so when you get a bigger motor you will be golden.
As for a catback, I run an Edelbrock 3" Catback with the cat removed. Really any 3" catback will work fine minus flowmaster. Dynomax has a relatively cheap setup for around $200 I believe.
As for the intake manifold. Summitracing sells a what they call a stage 3 intake. It is the exact design of an Edelbrock Performer RPM air gap manifold. It is I think $130 or so.
For the Carb, I went with a 700 DP, Holley carbs are alot more plentiful with parts than lets say an edelbrock. Some people will say a stock carb is the best way to go if you were a carb motor to begin with, which you aren't so, Try a 650 DP, and you can put on an electric choke if you wish, since they do not come with the option.
Ebay will sell these for $150-$200 or you can buy the carb new for damn near $400.
As for ignition, choose a vacuum advance distributor like one from an LG4 carb motor from 82-84, toss in a super coil of some sort and maybe a weight set, and call it a day. All you need is a tach wire, power wire from ignition and you are set.
Also, welcome to the boards dude.

You'll also need a fuel pressure regulator to get the pressure correct for a carb setup. Mallory makes a 3-port regulator that most folks use (including myself).

With the entire exhaust setup mentioned below, Airgap intake, 650 DP, and some advance in timing. I wouldn't say less than 50-60 HP
Most of the HP comes from the exhaust. The Carb, not so much. The carb and intake will play a bigger role if you get a new camshaft or transfer on the 350.

LO3 heads are going to limit any gains. In order to get 50-60 HP, you're going to have to do heads and cam as well.
The TBI forum has good information, and there's a 305 thread on the FAQ forum.

I forgot the swirlie heads are junk. (A few people will go off the deep end for talking smack about them). Get everything we discussed and expect 30 RWHP.
Get all the above, decent heads, and a cheapo camshaft and you get turn the 30 into 80-100.
I had an LG4 once. 140 BHP.
Did all the above, camshaft etc. minus the heads. I can guarantee you I had the HP 250. I did not even change the heads.
Every gain is proportionate to another mod.
That exhaust may give you 30 HP
Add heads that flow well. that 30 could be 50.
Here is an example.
You have Stock Engine 140 HP
Add full exhaust 30 HP +
Stock 140HP
Add Heads no exhaust 40 HP+
Then add the full exhaust to the engine with heads.
50 HP+
See where I am going with this? ON a stock engine the exhaust may give you 30 HP on a better flowing head system you can get way more. So everything you do to make air move in and out of your engine better will add a special ratio to that part. Everything will be proportionate anothers gain.

Check my setup in the sig. Just switched from tbi. My cam is cheap to find, I'm ready for something bigger now but it's still a nice streetable cam. Expect to pay 50 bucks or so for a nice used one. Vortec's are really nice heads for about the best price out there. I went with the Demon carb and love it so far. I'm pulling decent times without getting it dyno tuned yet. I went with the new Jegs Street Performance HEI dist. Seems really nice and a third the price of a MSD.

Anything on a 305 can be put on a 350, except for the parts that actually make it a 305.
