I've been working on a dual snorkle intake setup for my lg4, which came out amazing (ill try posting some pics later), and i noticed that the "metal filter thing" around the inside of where the real airfilter goes doesn't seem to do anything. I took the old junkyard airfilter housing and ripped that "metal thing" with some vicegrips and studied it a little. I have no clue what it is and it would be great if some one could tell me if there is any point to keeping it in my intake. I just looks like it is holding back airflow.

I assume you mean the air cleaner housing, not the intake manifold itself.

It's a charcoal bed to absorb fuel vapors from the fuel bowl vent and manifold plenum when the engine isn't running. The vapors are pulled back out and burnt when the engine is running. Basically a complementary piece to the vapor canister.

I suppose it's a bit of a restriction. I didn't do back-to-back comparisons before and after I took mine out.
