choke wont open
choke wont open
i have a 84 Trans-am, 305 q-jet.
my choke light stays all the time but when the motor heats up the primary choke plate is wide open ... and the larger secondary choke plate is still shut.
its supposed to open (at lest when you rev it) to my knowladge. But even if you rev it the primary choke plate is wide open but the secondary dosent budge. any info would help alot.. im tired of my choke light allways being on.

The secondary butterfly isn't a choke. It's an air valve, used to control the air/fuel going into the engine to keep it from bogging when you go wide open throttle.
The typical reason the choke light comes on is the alternator isn't putting out enough voltage. That's a good place to start looking. Could also be a bad circuit (wire/connection), or a bad choke relay.

Re: choke wont open
i know theres a bi-metal strip and a electric heater, but is the choke circut tied into a coolant temp sencer anywhere? i know everything about fuel injection but i dont know much about carbs, anyone know of a good book i can read about q-jets?
Re: choke wont open
okay.. so i was looking at it today and the fuse was poped, so i replaced it and the choke light went out. i am beginning to think this choke light has nothing to do with the actual choke but with the circut that turns the choke light on.

It certainly doesn't have anything to do with sensing the operation of the choke itself.
