CARB Question

I have a 1984 Camaro Z28, rebuilt motor 6000 miles, rebuilt carb 1500 miles, new plugs and wires 6000 miles, coil, cap and rotor button 1500 miles. I have no emission equip on the car. I have replaced the cat, fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel filter, air filter, coolant hoses. Will be doing the front end and tranny in JAN - wife permitting.

So, I set the timing cause it was pinging pretty hard. It ran like a dream for a week or two then when I would be getting down the road and it shifted the cars RPMs would drop. I would give it alittle more gas and as if by magic it starts to ping again. So I retarded the timing some more and it ran like a dream. But again it is pinging. Now I have thinking it could be the carb on this one. May be out of adjustment? AV tension not right. The computer might be trying to fix the problem but makes it worse.

Can someone assist me. If it wasn't enough after Drill and on my way to work got 2 flats. Dang tires and ice.

It isn't likely that the carb is causing pinging. A lean condition can cause that, but not likely.

Define what you mean by "I have no emission equip on the car." I assume you kept the O2 sensor. Did you remove the EGR valve? I would consider the cat "emissions equipment", but you said you replaced it.

Can we assume this is an LG4? And, it's pretty much stock except for what you removed? Any details on what was done during the rebuild?

Re: CARB Question

It was a factory rebuild. I know the shop that put it in didn't put a new flex plate on it and the tranny i locking up and then un locking every 30 sec while driving in 3rd or 4th. I have adjusted the tv cable as stated on the board and the book. When I start it she idles at 1500 then 2 min later hits about 3000 rpm. Then I put her into drive and she falls to back to 1500. I have checked for vac leaks but didn't find any near the carb, intake, or brake booster.

Look again. (For vacuum leaks) Nothings right about that idle, 1500rpm is on the high side, 3000rpm is madness, I would never put the thing in gear if the motors turning 3000rpm, you're asking for broken parts, and/or an accident. Whats the circumstances the ping occurs under, part/light throttle cruise, or heavy throttle use?

Re: CARB Question

When ever I put her in to drive she would drop to 1000-1500 rpm(just got her back from Tires plus) but when I give it gas she bogs down and starts pinging again.

You shouldn't idle at 1000rpms, warmed up, in gear. This is a CC-Qjet, right? Some times I'd get a high idle hang when I ran a CC-Qjet, my idle solenoid would hang the idle up high. I had all sorts of wiring problems, but I adverted that problem by unhooking the solenoid, you may want to verify if you're getting the throttle closed all the way, see if when the car is warmed up you can manually close the throttle further, and if the idle drops. Now, I'm still not clear about when you get the ping, is this under light cruise, or hard, prolonged open throttle, or just on throttle tip in, or all of that. From what you said above, it sounds like you're going lean when you jump on the throttle, you get a bog and ping, pretty classic lean condition. You combine that with a high-idle and it sounds like a wicked vacuum leak to me. I've deleted all my emmisions equipment when I went to my Edlebrock carb, there sure were a lot of vacuum driven items that the Q-jet used to drive, it wouldn't be hard to miss something.

Whats the ignition timing set at? You said you dailed it back and it got better, but then the problem came back - but where was it before, and where is it now? How hot is the motor running when you're having these issues?

You still haven't answered the question about what you mean by no emissions equipment on the car.

Re: CARB Question

Five7kid I have no A.I.R. System on the car.

The Car has the CC carb on it. The Ping happens at light cruise. Anytime I give it alittle throttle. I will go outside right now and see if it is hooked up.

A.I.R. delete only then.

Sounds like you need to go through all adjustments, starting with timing, all the way through IAB and TPS adjustment. Make sure the choke is working properly.

The pinging is probably a mixture of improper adjustments and an EGR valve that isn't doing or can't do its job (such as plugged exhaust cross-over passages).

Re: CARB Question

FIVE7Kid.... I been reading your post about The Choke and fast Idle. When out this morning and it worked wonderfully. I do have a small leak somewhere but I got it to Idle about 1000rpm and 800 rpm in gear. SO its alive HAHAHAHA. Thanks Five 7 kid.

The sticky in the top section of this forum on the E4ME has all of the details.
