carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

what are the better rebuild kits for a Rochester CCC 17085204?

Is a GP Sorenson rebuild kit from AZ a good kit or are there better ones to order from?

quality parts and instructions are what I'm looking for

I usually use an A/C Delco kit.

They're all pretty much the same. With one exception: the Tomco kit has a TOTALLY different needle & seat design, that I'm not too fond of. I don't use that brand. But, a Sorensen, Standard, Holley, Delco, or B-W, are all fine.

Acrylic enamel dissolves in gasoline.

Eastwood says the stuff is gasoline-resistant. Never tried it, though.

Re: carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

Me either.... but every kind of paint or coating I've ever tried, either dissolves in gas, or absorbs it and becomes yellow-brown-orange. Especially clear.

dissolves in gasoline... saving some money there

- almost forgot to ask about specialty tools. what do I really need? this carb has been rebuilt before so adjustments will be easiler.

Yeah, "fuel resistant" means "takes longer to dissolve than normal". It might be ok externally if it doesn't have constant contact with fuel, like from a leak.

first shot of berryman b-12 and it'd probably be gone then...

what do you think about specialty tools?

Some small screwdrivers and a small machinist's scale... I can't think of anything you can't improvise tools for.

I'll pick up an accurate scale at Northern Tools or Sears or maybe even AZ will have one.

Re: carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

I usually end up with Niehoff kits, those are stocked everywhere around here.

At Napa pick up a "carb adjustment tool". Looks like a screwdriver handle with a 1' long flexible snake extension. Comes with 5 or so tips. You'll only need the one "double D". That's used to adjust your mixture screws.

Then again you have the CC version, so they are typically not needed. Do you have a dwell tool? I believe you'd need one to set your mixture solenoid. Torx T15, T8 and T20 are the sizes you'll need.

Re: carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

You'll still need the idle mixture screw driver/tool. You can get by without the lean stop measurement tool if you count turns to seat before you remove the M/C and re-install at same height. A roll-pin lightly tapped over the TPS adjustment screw works for me.

A new float is a worthwhile investment while you pick up the kit. Usually runs $5-8.

Re: carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

Suggestion for cc-QJet idle mixture screws to make them easily adjustable..... remove them and use your Dremel with a cut-off wheel to cut a notch straight across the face of the screw head. Adjustments can be made with a regular screwdriver after that. Simple, cheap, effective. I do it to all my cc-QJets.

Re: carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

Got the small mechanic's scale, a gallon of berryman b-12 carb cleaner, and a GP Sorenson kit & float (AZ didn't have the A/C Delco kit and so went for it). I've got a dweel and a torx set. I will had to stop by Napa and get a carb adjustment tool with double D tip (good idea but don't have a Dremel). Also will ask Napa for the idle mixture screw driver/tool (good idea but didn't quite follow tapping over tip).

Couple months ago I noticed in a Snap-on catalogue a couple of expensive carb tools (for me anyway). One injects propane into the carb for correct idle mixture IIRC and another for cold air injection during set-up IIRC. Not buying but how helpful are these tools? Can a very good rebuild be done without them?

Re: carb rebuild kit/stuff suggestions

The idle mixture driver/tool is the double d that Sonix referred to. I wouldn't buy anything else until circumstances required it.

I can't imagine ever using either of those.
