Transmission Problems After Swapping to Carb?
After throwing parts and as much knowledge from everybody at my car for a year, I've found the answer. The 700-R4 is calibrated for fuel injection. If you swap to carbed induction, you have to change the TV cable and plunger spring.
GM makes a kit to "update a 700-R4 to a 4l60 from 93+". Basically, it's a kit that has a very important spring. You can get the spring by itself, but this is just an easy reference to find the spring.
Part Number 24502513
The only part needed in this kit is the spring. If you just want to order the spring or the kit in person, you can visit a GM dealership.
It goes in the transmission, and adjusts the tension and travel length for the tv cable.
The second part you'll need is a TV cable suited for a carb. At Checker Auto Parts, Schuck's Auto Supply, Kragen Auto Parts, or Autozone, they'll regularly carry the TV cable needed.
Part Number CA-1970
Add the bracket of your choice depending on your carb. I only have experience with Edelbrock so far and there's 2 options
Part Number 8031=For Small Block Chevy
or
Part Number 8032=For Vortec Intakes

Starting with what factory EFI system? I've reused the TV cables and such from TBI to carb without issue. TPI, obviously, needs a shorter TV cable. Wasn't aware of any differences insde the transmission, though.
Does that spring actually change the amount of cable travel or do it just change how much tension it puts on the cable?

Re: Transmission Problems After Swapping to Carb?
The instructions that came with the kit are very specific, and outline all of the specifications for the 700-R4. The kit is useless for what I needed. The only part I needed was the spring. It says that if you change induction from TPI or TBI coupled with a 700-R4, you need to change the spring to keep the shift points and feel with a carb.
I went the aftermarket route with cables and brackets and ended up trying to find stock parts to get the transmission back to normal. This is how I got the transmission to shift properly, and thought I'd share my info seeing as how I've been posting and trying unsuccessfully to fix this problem on and off for a year.

Finally shifts right. Thought I would have burnt something out or broken something inside the tranny by now, but it still shifts strong. I haven't taken it to WOT yet because my carb is not playing nice with the engine yet. More tuning is necessary, but the tranny needs no more attention for now.
