should my choke plate close to start the car when the engine is warm
had my engine rebuilt. I have the same 305 but had an Edelbrock 1406 put on. it's been running fine but now after 400 miles it starts great when cold but after it warms up it acts like the batter is going dead but it isn't. we tested it. you have to really push the pedal all the way down and hold it for a while and it eventually starts. I noticed the plate doesn't close at all to start it and I though it was suppose to when you first star the car. when I hold the choke plate closed it will start fine. it only does this when it is warm. our starter cracked the other day and I put a new one on. it started great and now has been doing this. anyway, my question is is the plate suppose to stay all the way open when the car is warm even if you try to start the car or is it still suppose to close some just to start it? Thanks

yeah, it turns over slowly when warm and acts like the batter is going dead. we pump the gas and keep turning it over. so far it has started back but sounds like it doesn't want too. it looks like white steam, i guess gas coming out of the carb area then. forgot to add that all smog stuff is gone no O2 and had to switch to vacuum distributor. it was running fine for about two weeks or 400 miles on the rebuild. it has been a constant 92-95 degree day the past week. don't know if this would have anything to do with it. our ecm doesn't control a lot anymore but it hasn't been an issue. could it still be something with the carb or a fuel/ air ratio or just the car is ready to be redialed in and retuned. the guy said bring it in in 500 miles and he'll redial everything again since all the new parts had to have some time to seat in at no charge.

if there are headers on the car it could be giving the starter a hard time (excess heat.) The steam is normal and its because your pumping the gas, the issue probably has more to do with your starter/electrical system than the carb. I would make sure the battery cables and wires to the starter are ok. Is the starter remaned?

no, I just bought a brand new one. i've had bad luck with reman. parts lately. we still have the original exhaust manifolds on the engine. couldn't afford headers yet. I'll check that. maybe the wires have come loose.thanks
