Egr question?

I have a 1985 Trans am and I have a 750cfm edelbrock performer carb. I was wondering what would happen if i removed my EGR system to put the carb on my car. The carb is set up for no EGR valve. I have already removed the smog pump and the catalytic converter. Does anybody know how much HP the carb is rated for?

Re: Egr question?

How much HP will depend on whats under the carb, and how well you can tune it. A 750cfm carb should be capable of supporting a 500hp engine though. Though honestly, the stock Qjet or a mechanical secondary Holley would be a better choice for a performance carb. The Edelbrock carbs aren't bad, in that they function well, but they are a pretty outdated design from the 1940s/1950s thats been surpassed since by the 4150/4160 Holleys and the Qjet.

Aas for EGR, if its still working, leave it there - you aren't going to gain any power by removing it if it still works properly. EGR only works at light throttle, not at idle or under power (WOT). It cleans up the exhaust somewhat and improves gas mileage. You'll notice a drop in gas mileage if you remove it, and thats about it really.

My advice would be to keep the Qjet, unless there is some unknown-to-me reason for you replacing it. The Qjet will give better power, drivebility, and fuel economy over the Edelbrock carb if everythings working properly. What made you want to change carbs?

I have 4 or 5 qjets that dont work. I got a good deals on the edelbrock I payed $165 and it was still in the box never been on a car. Is there a way to hook the EGR back up I dont think the carb is for EGR.

The EGR valve opening is controlled by the EGR solenoid. The EGR solenoid is controlled by the ECM. Without the input from the q-jet throttle position sensor, the ECM isn't going to properly control the EGR.

It's not that your Edelbrock isn't made for EGR (it is for non-computer controlled EGR systems), it's that your EGR isn't made for the Edelbrock.

I would guess that it isn't your q-jets that aren't working, but some part of the CC system. You can't just put the Edelbrock on (it won't fit on a stock manifold, for one thing), you have to spend money on other things as well - vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, throttle valve geometry corrector bracket and TCC lock-up provision if auto transmission, etc. More than likely, the real "fix" is to fix whatever is wrong with your current system rather than downgrading to an Edelbrock carb.

I already put the carb on the car. It is running great! All the carbs are bad they all have something diff wrong with them. I went to autozone and got the addaptor plate went to the hardware store got addaptor for brake boost line. Cost me about $30. But i have a vacuum line that runs down the back of the motor into the wireing harness does anybody know what its for?
