Re: car won't idle...

Sounds like what was happening to me after my recent motor swap. There were a couple of things going on. First, I had used a cheap carb gasket and wasn't getting a good seal and went way to lean. Second, my choke wasn't working properly. Have a buddy start the car with the air cleaner assembly off and use your hand as an impromptu choke. That will tell you if you have a lean condition. Could also be your fuel filter and about a dozen other problems with the carb. Have you checked ignition timing? Start checking a bunch of stuff. Give details here of what you find if you can't pinpoint the problem. Tests that don't point to the cause point away from the not cause. There's enough people here to brainstorm the problem given enough info.

Re: car won't idle...

Check your float. If its too high it will allow you to start but it will idle like crap to begin with (sound as if you have 4 sizes larger of a cam) and when you hit the gas it will be lazy but when you let and try to return to idle it will load up with gas die. If you pump the gas while its dieing it will only get worse in this case. Better to keep it running is touch the gas a little and hold it no pumping so you dont squirt fuel in the bores you just open up the butterflies. You could also bump up your initial timing.
