Idle Going up and down...

Alright I got the car all timed and hooked up. Its running pretty well considering I havent really tweaked the carb or advance yet. I took it for a ride and its got some more pep in its step.

The only thing I cant figure out if why my idle is doing this.

87 Monte Carlo, MSD vacuum advance Dizzy, mechanical qjet.

I'll be idling right at 500rpms, a little rough but still decent. It will idle fine, if I tap the gas it then surges from 500 to about 1000. It will go back and forth, cold and warm. Once I get on the gas its fine. It does it in drive, park and neutral.

What could cause this? My idle air screws are 3 turns out each. It sprays fuel good, I currently have no choke just wired open because I havent gotten there yet.

Any thoughts?

COuld this be caused by play near the throttle plate shafts that hold the butterflys? I didnt do the bushings when I yanked the carb off. Where is the best place to get those brass bushings?

Where do you have the vacuum advance hooked up?

Re: Idle Going up and down...

vacuum leak or too weak of advance springs being put in the distributor would be my guesses. If you put in the "light" springs then they will cause idle rpm hunting like you describe.

Re: Idle Going up and down...

The advance weights in there are the stock ones. They dont come with any on the streetfire. As for the vacuum port. It is at the left about 3/4in down from the top of the carb. Definatly above the throttle blades like I read it was suppose to be.

Re: Idle Going up and down...

Hmmm I just remembered that when I when to put one of my intake bolts back in it refused to thread in. I never got the resolved, wonder if my intake leak is coming from my intake manifold by any chance?
