throttle shaft play...how much is too much

I have a quadrajet with only about 35,000 miles on it. How do you determine if throttle shaft needs to be bushed. How many miles can you usually get before bushings are necessary? thanks.

The usual sign is that the carb won't always return to a fully closed position without help while the engine is running. 35k shouldn't be anything to worry about.

That's nothing as far as mileage goes.
Another test is to see if it's leaking. Put an unlit bottle of propane near it, and see if the idle speed changes. As long as it's not leaking, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
